John Dunning. Booked to Die: A Mystery Introducing Cliff Janeway [1ST PRINTING]. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1992.

Price: US$50.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: This is a shelf-worthy lightly marked ex-library first printing (full printing line with "1" on its copyright page.) Here's a complete list of the library markings: glue stains inside front and rear cover and on verso of front and rear jacket flaps, glue stain on front endpaper from a neatly removed card pocket, a few pages with "dog ear" corner folds, and some pages with small stains in the margins. That's it. All of the other library marks were on the jacket protector (which I have replaced with a new Brodart cover) and on the card pocket which was removed from the front end paper. The binding is beginning to crack between pages 218 and 219, and there is some spine lean, but there is no reading crease in the spine. The boards have some wear on edges, but are otherwise unmarked, sharp cornered, and with bright metallic blue titles. All pages are present, there are no tears, and there are no "reader marks" such as notes or underlines. The unclipped dust jacket is in very good condition: bright, whole and unmarked, with the noted glue stains on verso, a short closed edge tear in back flap fold, very light wear at head and heel of spine, plus a 2" damp stain at base of back hinge fold which is only visible on the verso. As with all Space Age Book purchases, I will ship this book in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure it reaches its proud new owner in the same condition as my description.

Description: BOOKED TO DIE, the first book in John Dunning's Cliff Janeway series, is one of the most popular mysteries among book collectors. Janeway is a book collector and rare book dealer, and Dunning is one of the few authors who gets the world of book collecting right. This first edition copy is clean and crisp enough to have come straight from the printer. It has had only one owner, and has been kept in a mylar dust jacket cover inside a non-smoking home. This copy is perhaps made more significant in that it is inscribed by Dunning to one of the country's most prominent mystery booksellers and her author then-husband. This is legitimately historic copy of a book important to book collectors around the world, and as clean and bright a copy as you're likely to see.

Description: 1st printing. Cloth and boards. 321pp. Signed. When this, the first of Dunning's five Cliff Janeway detective novels was published, it was praised far and wide as a superb "bibliomystery," a murder mystery set in the world of collecting and selling rare books. It has stood the test of time in this bookseller's opinion and belongs in the top echelon of what is now a raft of modern bibliomysteries. The succeeding Janeway novels also satisfy the bibliomaniac. The dj for this title is one of my personal all-time favorites. Fine in fine dj. PLUS signed, limited copies of the booklets Dunning wrote for antiquarian book fairs: BOOKSCOUT (19pp, signed, fine, for Midwestern Book Fair in Chicago) and THE BOOKMAN'S LIMERICKS (20pp, signed, fine, for Seattle Antiquarian Bookfair). Both have on the back page the bookseller's label of Dinkytown Books, Minneapolis.
