Lang, Andrew. The Book of Romance. Longmans, Green & Co., London, 1902.

Price: US$100.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: 384pp. 1st Edition. Original blue decorative cloth, elaborately stamped in gilt with a medieval motif, all edges gilt. Pictorial endpapers with dragon\damsel motif. Illustrated by H.J. Ford (8 color plates, 35 b+w plates & 8 in text). Binding also designed by H.J. Ford with his monogram in the bottom right corner. Includes stories written by Lang's wife about the Arthurian legends and Robin Hood, among others. There are flaws to this copy, as it is ex-library (historical society). There is a shelf label ghost to the spine where the label was carefully removed by this bookseller. Ink stamp on the first blank prelim. Library pocket to the verso of the back endpaper. The back endpaper has been partially colored in the letters "G" and "N" in "Good Night". One of the black and white plates has also been partially colored by a youthful hand with colored pencil (which we have attempted to erase, making it less obtrusive). Faint contemporary ownership inscription to the front free endpaper. Some staining to the back board. Corners bumped and gently rubbed. In spite of these many flaws, this is still a bright copy and--if you will--a more affordable copy than a perfect copy (which would be in the $300-$500 range). Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

Lang, Andrew. THE DISENTANGLERS. Longmans, Green, 1902.

Price: US$300.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Lang, Andrew. THE DISENTANGLERS. London: Longmans, Green, & Co., 1902. Seven illustrations including frontispiece, by H. J. Ford. FINE in original publisher's pictorial gray cloth stamped in black and red. THE DISENTANGLERS consists of a dozen detective stories, most involving marriage entanglements -- thus the title. Andrew Lang (along with illustrator H. J. Ford) is best known as the creator of the famous Twelve Coloured Fairy Book series starting with the Blue Fairy Book. What is little known is that he also wrote this light and entertaining Sherlock Holmes homage (twelve stories with names such as "The Adventure of the Rich Uncle" and "The Adventure of the Fair American") in the very same year that Doyle produced "The Hound Of The Baskervilles." As one might expect from an author writing outside his usual genre, this mystery novel is exceedingly scarce in First Edition. Ex- Paul Lemperly (bookplate), from his 1940 Parke-Bernet sale.
