Description: 212 pp + 32 p, the book is x-library with the followinng markings: shelf number on the lower spine, front endpapers have the card pocket and residue from the removal of the date due slip,solid, and the rules of the library are pasted inside the rear cover, I can find no other markings, the book is solid and the pages are clean with light browning, the covers are tight and have some edge wear and other spotting on the upper rear cover.

Description: 321 pages (complete). An joyfully owned copy. The half-title page has a gift-inscription, and a pleasing wood-cut ex-libris plate (Hilary Snell). One of these previous owners were obviously dismayed at the absence of coloured illustrations and set about rectifying this deficiency. Consequently several of the illustrations were coloured in by various media. Nonetheless, they bring some character to the book. Blind pressed art deco style decoration on the front board. The spine has been repaired. The boards are worn, scuffed, marked all about from handling and ownership. The boards and spine are steady and sure. The end papers are worn about the edges. The contents have evidence of avid use throughout. The pages have marks from handling and use. There are occasional splashes of foxing. Description: A good copy of the 1st edition in the original pink decorative cloth binding with all page edges gilt. With numerous black and white illustrations by H J Ford. The binding has delicate gilt illustration to the front board which is bright. The spine is very sunned and faded. It has been rebacked with the original spine relaid onto matching cloth, so the book is sound and tight. The back board is clean with some faint marking and fading close to the spine. Corners with light wear. All page edges gilted. Contents are complete and clean. There is toning to the page margins, particularly the top margin and a persistent small stain at the top page edge from circa p170 to 257. The contents page has had the contents marked off. There are 2 flattened creases to the rear free endpaper and a number of top page corners have been turned over at one time, leaving light flattened creases. Occasional light marking otherwise
