DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870), [BROWNE, Hablot Knight, illustrator]. Bleak House. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1853, 1853.

Price: US$576.39 + shipping

Description: [Crime Fiction] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (22 x 15cm), pp.xvi; 624 [2]. Typographical errors present in the first issue: p.19, line 6, 'elgble'; p.209, line 23, 'chair' instead of 'hair; and p.275, line 22, 'counsinship' instead of 'cousinship', p.529, line 32, 'picter' for 'picture'. Includes the half-title (often lacking). With 40 engraved illustrations by H.K. Browne, including a frontispiece and vignette title page. Elengantly bound in recent brown half morocco, with green buckram sides, raised bands to spine, red title label, with gilt decoration, marbled edges and endpapers. Discreet name 'Mason' to first blank, some scattered foxing Text leaves clean, browning to margins of plates (as usual), especially title and frontispiece. Binding as new. An attractive copy. Although many of Dickens most famous works are crawling with crime, it is just this title that can be firmly placed in the murder mystery category. 'Bleak House' is essentially a classic whodunit, professionally solved, which became only the second entry (after Poe's 'Tales') in the Haycraft-Queen cornerstone list of crime fiction. Dickens returned to crime fiction for his highly-rated final story, the 'Mystery of Edwin Drood' but this was unfinished and the case unsolved. Within 'Bleak House' the author experiments with dual narrators and the story ranges from the dark and filthy Victorian slums to the landed aristocracy; Inspector Bucket is one of the earliest detectives to appear in fiction and was probably based on C.K. Field of the recently formed Scotland Yard. An essential mystery novel.

DICKENS, Charles; Illustrated by BROWNE, Halbot K. "Phiz"; STEPHENSON, Heathfield Harman; [CRICKET]. BLEAK HOUSE. London: Bradbury and Evans., 1853.

Price: US$960.65 + shipping

Description: First edition in book form. Late 20th century full burgundy morocco with decorative morocco onlay, titles in gilt to the spine. All edges with contemporary marbling. Modern marbled endpapers. Frontispiece, title page vignette and 38 full-page illustrations by H.K. Browne. A very good copy indeed, the binding square and firm. The contents with the inevitable darkening of the plate edges with some offsetting to the opposite pages are otherwise clean throughout. The original blank front endpaper has the ownership inscription of the famous English cricketer Heathfield H. Stephenson, dated 1894. A curious and appealing cricketing association copy. With all first issue points within the text present. (Smith, part I: 6b) Charles Dickens' works are among the most celebrated in the English literary canon but cricket fans might argue that his greatest achievement was inadvertently triggering the long international cricket rivalry of England and Australia. The first ever England vs Australia tour was originally conceived as a Victorian PR stunt and sponsorship opportunity by two entrepreneurial Melbourne-based businessmen, the wine merchants Felix William Spiers and Christopher Pond. Having failed to persuade Charles Dickens to conduct a lecture tour of Australia, the two Englishmen turned their attention to cricket. The sport's popularity was growing in Australia, so Spiers and Pond invited a team of leading English cricketers to tour the country. Twelve players signed up for the tour. Named "The Eleven of All England" or "H. H. Stephenson's XI" after the English Captain Heathfield Harman Stephenson, they each received £150, first class passage aboard SS Great Britain (costing 70 guineas), plus all expenses. The inaugural English tour of Australia was a great success, promoting the development of Australian cricket and inspiring later English teams to visit Australia. A dark force from which the real people must escape in order to create another society of their own. [Dickens] had been preparing for this novel all his life and, despite the calamities. which had helped to provoke it in the first place, . was even happy while he was writing it. It might even be said that Bleak House cured the very malaise which was responsible for its composition" (Ackroyd, 649-50). Smith, Dickens, I, 10. HBS 69049. $1,000.

DICKENS, Charles.. Bleak House.. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1853, 1853.

Price: US$1601.08 + shipping

Description: First edition in book form, from the library of William Foyle, in an attractive Samuel Tout binding. "Writing at the height of his powers, Dickens adopts a virtuoso form of double narration, and the novel has since the middle of the twentieth century been widely acclaimed as his greatest work" (ODNB). From 1868 to 1879, Samuel Tout (1841-1902) bound books in Soho, London. He then worked in Whitechapel with William Coward, continuing on his own after 1880. Tout was also an early member of the staff of Karslake's Hampstead Bindery, which opened in Charing Cross in 1898. The novel was first issued in monthly parts between March 1852 and September 1853 and issued in book form on completion. Provenance: though unmarked as such, this copy comes from the collection of William Foyle (1883-1963), the co-founder of the eponymous chain of booksellers. Foyle's grandson acquired a substantial portion of the original collection at the landmark Foyle Library sale in 2000, including the present copy. Eckel, p. 79; Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 275-304; Kremers, pp. 100-3; Smith I 10. Octavo (208 x 131 mm). Late 19th-century brown half morocco by Tout, spine with raised bands forming six compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, marbled paper sides and endpapers, all edges gilt, green silk bookmarker. Etched frontispiece, vignette title page, and 38 plates (including the 10 "dark" plates) by Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz). With 19th-century armorial bookplate of Daniel Drew (1850-1914) of Burnley on the front pastedown. Light rubbing to extremities, faint sunning to spine, slight browning to margins: a very good copy.

With first issue points, as identified by Eckel: 'elgble' to page 19 line 6, "chair" to page 209 line 23, 'counsinship' to page 275 line 22, and "picter" to page 529 line 32. Bound from the parts, with small stamp holes to the gutter. The original serialisation ran from March 1852 to September 1853 across twenty issues. Each issue cost one shilling, though the final double issue cost two shillings. Rebound in a smart quarter morocco binding, with gilt lettering to the spine. With the original front paper wraps for No. V of the serial, bound in. With a frontispiece, engraved title page, and thirty-eight full-page plates, including the ten dark plates. Collated complete. Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne, known by his pen name "Phiz", an English illustrator who contributed his work to ten of Charles Dickens' books, including 'David Copperfield', and 'Dombey and Son'. Narrated by Esther Summerson, Dickens's novel concerns the long running legal case, Jarndyce and Jarndyce, in the Court of Chancery. The case surrounds a number of several conflicting wills written by the same person. Inspired by a true story, the novel actually helped support a judicial reform, in the form of the 1870s Judicature Acts. The half title page is present. With the previous owner's ink signature to the title page. Rebound in quarter morocco. Externally, excellent with little shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound. Dickens, Charles. Bleak House. Bradbury & Evans, London, 1853.

Price: US$1750.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Complete with all 40 plates which include the frontispiece, title-page and the 10 "dark plates." Has all three typographical errors associated with the first edition, first issue: P.19, line 6: "elgble"; P.209, line 23: "chair" instead of "hair"; and P.275, line 22: "counsinship" instead of "cousinship." Bound by Bayntun-Riviere in full green crushed morocco with a gilt portrait of Dickens on the front board and gilt signature on the rear. Marbled end papers all edges gilt. Front outer joint a little tender. Extremely clean internally, with much less foxing than is typically seen. A very handsome copy overall. One of Dickens' finest novels, the action in Bleak House revolves around a never-ending set of related Chancery Court cases to resolve the inheritance of a considerable estate. Dickens turns his pen to a biting condemnation of the system and the need for reform (which shouldn't surprise the Dickens scholar). A complex novel and filled with subplots, it engages and titillates the reader from start to finish. Noted by some for Inspector Bucket's prominent role in investigating a murder, which earned it a spot on the Haycraft-Queen cornerstone list of detective fiction, the novel is also memorable for its complex representation of femininity. "There's more to Esther than simple good nature. As the book progresses she reveals a dark, angry wit. It is a wit that can still strike a chord today" (The Guardian). An important social commentary, and Dickens at his best. Near Fine.

DICKENS, Charles.. Bleak House.. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1853, 1853.

Price: US$1921.30 + shipping

Description: First edition, bound from the original monthly parts as first published between March 1852 and September 1853. "Writing at the height of his powers, Dickens adopts a virtuoso form of double narration, and the novel has since the middle of the twentieth century been widely acclaimed as his greatest work" (ODNB). "The satire of Bleak House focuses on the obfuscations and delays of the court of chancery which result in widespread human misery and suffering, but the novel's complicated plot and centripetal organization bring into the picture a great cross-section of contemporary English society" (ODNB). Of note is the inclusion of ten dark plates, a new mode of illustration particularly fitting to the novel: "As Dickens's vision of society darkened, Browne adjusted his techniques, pioneering in the use of 'dark plates', where the plate was machine-ruled in parallel grooves which printed an almost uniform tone either before or after the figures and background were hand drawn. These brooding, atmospheric designs harmonized with the gloomy, foggy world of Bleak House and Little Dorrit" (Schlicke, p. 59). Eckel, p. 79; Hatton & Cleaver, pp. 275-304; Kremers, pp. 100-3; Smith I, 10. Paul Schlicke. ed., The Oxford Companion to Charles Dickens, 2001. Octavo (207 x 133 mm). Contemporary half calf, spine with raised bands, compartments ruled and with floral decoration in gilt, brown morocco label, marbled paper sides, endpapers, and edges Etched frontispiece, vignette title page, and 38 plates (including the 10 "dark" plates) by "Phiz" (H. K. Browne). 19th-century engraved bookplate of William Hugh Wade-Gery (died 1870) to front pastedown. Light bumping and wear, wormholes to head and foot of rear joint, small strip to foot of front cover, light foxing throughout: a very good copy.

One sheet loose (page 1 of the advertisements at the front) of part 2) and with ca 5 cm tear, covers as well as interiors generally well preserved throughout apart from a few chips and tears and some slight, occasional soiling; plates are heavily foxed throughout, though. First edition of Bleak House, issued in 20 numbers bound in 19 monthly parts, parts 19-20 published jointly as a doublenumber. This set with some of the printed covers substituted with plain, blue wrappers and quite a few other deviations from the collation in Hatton & Cleavers bibliography (p. 275-304), see specification. (Hatton & Cleaver, p. 275-304).

Price: US$2035.00 + shipping

Description: First edition. Illustrated with 40 engraved plates by Hablot K. Browne. 8vo, in a handsome contemporary binding of three-quarter dark-green morocco over the original patterned cloth. The spine is fully decorated and elaborately gilt tooled with fine panel designs between gilt tooled raised bands separating the compartments, one compartment gilt lettered, the head and tail of the spine gilt tooled., marbled edges xvi, 624 pp. A fine copy, very well preserved, tight and strong, the plates all in nice condition with some of the usual edge mellowing. A very pleasing copy and an unusually good example. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THIS ESPECIALLY SOUGHT AFTER WORK. ‘With BLEAK HOUSE, Dickens thought he was making an advance in art. He had been occasionally reproached for the old-fashioned, happy-go-lucky progress of his stories, and now set himself resolutely to amend the fault. The result was a fiction which his biographer considers very nearly perfect.Nothing is introduced at random, everything tends to the catastrophe, the various lines of the plot converge and fit to its centre, and to this larger interest all the rest is irresistibly drawn.’ (see Forster and Gissing) There is ingenuity throughout and an almost total disregard for probability.it is a brilliant, admirable, and most righteous satire upon the monstrous iniquity of "old Father Antic the Law" with incidental mockery of allied abuses which, now as then, hold too large a place in the life of the English people. A fine and handsome period piece in excellent state of preservation and presentation.

DICKENS Charles. Bleak House. Bradbury & Evans, 1853.

Price: US$2269.25 + shipping

Description: - Bradbury & Evans, London 1853, Fort in-8 (13,5x21,5cm), xvi, 624pp., relié. Ex-libris Syan Siennen. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND] xvi, 624pp.

"The wind blowing in the east is a constant point of reference for Mr. John Jarndyce, one of the novel's central characters, and a beacon of social good. He deploys the phrase when his world is threatend by disorder, or when he witnesses broader injustices. Easterly winds, after all, were believed to carry dirt and disease, and were considered a real threat in Victorian Britain. Given the novel's preoccupation with physical environments, and how these relate to individual and public health, this small comments is, in fact, incredibly charged with meaning." (Sotheby's) "[I]n Bleak House for the first time [society] is seen as an absurdity, an irrelevance, almost a madness. HBS 69008. $7,500.

DICKENS, Charles.. Bleak House.. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1853, 1853.

Price: US$16010.80 + shipping

Description: First edition in book-form, in the original cloth and in exemplary condition. The novel was first published in serial form between March 1852 and September 1853. "Writing at the height of his powers, Dickens adopts a virtuoso form of double narration, and the novel has since the middle of the twentieth century been widely acclaimed as his greatest work" (ODNB). 59). Eckel, p. 79; Hatton and Cleaver, p. 275-304; Kremers, pp. 100-3; Smith I, 10. Paul Schlicke, ed., The Oxford Companion to Charles Dickens, 2001. Octavo. Original blind-stamped green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, yellow coated endpapers, leaves unopened. Housed in a custom box. Etched frontispiece, vignette title-page, and 38 plates (including the 10 "dark" plates) by Hablot Knight Browne (Phiz). Spine sunned with a few spots, faint marks on cloth, binding firm and square, internally very fresh: an excellent copy.
