Description: An interesting approach to California history, with each chapter containing a combination of Indian lore, fiction stories, and non-fiction writing. For example, the first chapter on "The Indians," starts with about a half-dozen Indian origin stories from tribes around the state, and follows these with an equal number of excerpts from historical and anthropological studies of California Indians, and ends with the story of Ishi, the last of the Yahi Indians. Each chapter has a similar mix of folklore, fiction and non-fiction writing, usually excerpts from larger works. Contains some writings of well-known western writers, such as Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Jack London, John Muir, etc. Chapters are: The Indians; The Coming of the Spanish; Pastoral; The Conquest; Glints of Gold; The Young State; The Passing of the Frontier; Into the Twentieth Century; and Climax of Growth and Challenge. Contains a list of other suggested readings, and a list of quoted authors at the end. Also a 16-page section of black & white photos of California scenes by famous nature photographers; otherwise not illustrated. Generally in very good condition, but the cover has a lot of rubbing all over, plus some mild creasing to corners. Light ink stamp in upper right corner - "5273-475A"; possibly a previous inventory number? 6 x 9 inches, 536 + xiii pages.
