Miller, Henry. Black Spring. The Obelisk Press, 16 Place Vendome, Paris., 1938.

Price: US$1026.14 + shipping

Condition: Fair

Description: Originally published 1936 by Obelisk Press in soft covers, this reprint has a SIGNED INSCRIPTION BY HENRY MILLER on the detached fly-leaf. "To Prudence - memories of Corfu - the paradisical clinic, Henry. 8/8/38" Signed also by previous owner, Prudence Lucas. Married to the writer and classicist F. L. Lucas, she had an brief affair with Miller whilst in Greece just before the war. Provenance: The copy's poor condition (front cover missing, inscription page and half-title page detached, spine partially missing and text browned and fragile though unmarked though still sewn tightly together and absolutely readable) is due to it having survived a direct hit by a bomb during the London Blitz. It was happily rescued from the ruins of No.34 Redcliffe Road by Prudence Lucas and her friend, the writer Joan Wyndham, who was helping her in an attempt to recover some of her possessions from the rubble, in particular her own unfinished novel. This episode is described by Joan Wyndham in her published wartime journal LOVE LESSONS. This copy of Black Spring passed down from Prudence to its current owner, a relative.
