From the library of the son of Joyce Gill, a life-long friend of Evelyn Waugh. Joyce and Evelyn had a passionate affair during the annulment of Evelyn"s first marriage to "She-Evelyn". The pair were introduced sometime around Christmas in 1923 at a nightclub in Fitzrovia, their affair seeming to come to a head in the summer of 1935, when Evelyn invited Joyce to leave her husband and join him on his travels to Abyssinia. In the publisher's original cloth binding. With a cartographic frontispiece of the Azanian Empire. 8vo, black and red decorative cloth, the spine lettered in gilt. 303 pp. A well preserved copy with some evidence of use and age. FIRST EDITION OF EVELYN WAUGH'S THIRD NOVEL. This satiric novel by Waugh, published in 1932, skewers attempts to impose European customs and beliefs upon so-called primitive peoples. The story is set in the fictional empire of Azania, an island off the coast of Africa. Upon the death of the emperor of Azania, rule is assumed by his grandson Seth, a recent graduate of Oxford who is eager to modernize his country. Seth’s ideas are a muddle of fashionable notions and philosophies, and each of his new programs fails. Ultimately the country relapses into barbarism and cannibalism.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition, first issue. Publisher's marble patterned red and black cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original cream dust jacket, lettered in black and red. Near fine, some light spotting to the page edges, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with some light toning to the spine, minor soiling to the otherwise clean wrappers, some light spotting to the flaps. Overall a, fresh and unsophisticated copy. Inspired by Waugh's own excursions to Ethiopia, Black Mischief is an imperialist satire set in Azania, a fictional island nation off of the southeastern coast of Africa. Specifically, it tells of a young emperor's attempt to modernize his home nation after returning from England where he attended Oxford. Not only do his modernization efforts not only fail utterly, however, but they also cause the nation to regress into cannibalism and ultimately become a protectorate of the United Nations. Notably, Black Mischief features Waugh's popular hero Basil Seal.

Description: First edition, large paper issue. Number 32 of 250 special copies on laid paper signed by the author with additional illustrations by the author. Original violet buckram with gilt titles to the spine and vignette to the upper cover in printed brown dustwrapper. A near fine copy with some fading to the spine, in spite of the dustwrapper, in a superb, fine dustwrapper, which is bright and crisp, with a faint crease to the lower cover. Eight full page illustrations, none of which appear in the trade edition, plus one full page map. The author's third novel, drawing on his experiences in Africa which as he reported in his travel journal, Ninety Two Days, "experiences vivid enough to demand translation into literary form". Given the instant success of Waugh's first two novels, the critical response was lukewarm, and the novel became better known for its attack on the Catholic journal, The Tablet, and the heated response from The Tablet's Editor, Ernest Oldmeadow, who asserted that it was "a work both disgraceful and scandalous. It abounds in coarse and sometimes disgusting passages, and its climax is disgusting." Needless to say this did nothing to harm sales. The limited edition is seldom encountered in its dustwrapper or in such nice condition.
