Price: US$7.18 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: No marks noted in text. Binding is tight and square. Gently read. . . . . . . . . . Richard Wright grew up in the woods of Mississippi amid poverty, hunger, fear, and hatred. He lied, stole, and raged at those around him; at six he was a *drunkard,* hanging about in taverns. Surly, brutal, cold, suspicious, and self-pitying, he was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common lot. Black Boy is Richard Wright's powerful account of his journey from innocence to experience in the Jim Crow South. It is at once an unashamed confession and a profound indictment - a poignant and disturbing record of social injustice and human suffering.

This book is a memoir by American author Richard Wright, detailing his upbringing. Wright describes his youth in the South: Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee, and his eventual move to Chicago, where he establishes his writing career and becomes involved with the Communist Party. Black Boy gained high acclaim in the United States because of Wright's honest and profound depiction of racism in America. While the book gained significant recognition, much of the reception throughout and after the publication process was highly controversial. A clean presentable copy in a Brodart mylar jacket.

Wright, Richard. Black Boy. Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1945.

Price: US$32.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Harper & Brothers Publishers; New York; 1945. Hard Cover. Book condition: Good. Dust jacket condition: None. Unstated edition, indeterminate printing due to absence of any number line. Hardcover with no jacket. 8-3/8" tall, 228 numbered pages. This book is in at least good condition: the exterior is square, very clean, free of corner bumps and edge dings though all four corners have wear with mild color loss; spine ends are very lightly bumped but otherwise undamaged; the spine itself is undamaged but has a mild amount of fade (see reddish box in photo) and wear (of the gilt design); hinges are strong and not damaged in any fashion. The interior has several issues, all before getting to the title page: the front paste down has an inked inscription and a penciled signature; the FFEP has glued to it a 4-page BOMC essay in defense of this book; and there is an inked name/date/city on the half title page. After those issues, the interior is perfectly clean and completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and any sort of paper damage; paper is lightly toned nd very flexible. Not remaindered or ex-library but likely a Book Club edition due to the absence of a printing history and the presence of the BMOC essay.

Richard Wright. BLACK BOY - A Record of Childhood and Youth (First UK Edition in wartime dustwrapper). Victor Gollancz Ltd., London, 1945.

Price: US$58.48 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First impression of the first UK edition, published by Victor Gollancz in 1945. The book was originally published in the US by Harpers & Brothers, New York earlier in the same year. Although dated 1945 by the publisher, the Gollancz edition was apparently first published in Feb 1946, with a 2nd impression in March 1946. ***Very good in maroon cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The cloth is nice and clean with just very slight fading at the edges. The gilt is still quite bright. No bumps to the boards. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions. Light foxing spots to the preliminary pages. The paper used is very thin, but there is no creasing. However, please note that there is a stain to p.59 which affects some of the text, and which has slightly affected pp.58-64 (please see scans). ***In a very good standard Gollancz printed dustwrapper, with the printed price of 8/6 net on the spine. The fragile post-war dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just slight loss at the top and tail of the spine. There is some creasing and browning to the edges, and the spine is very slightly darkened. The plain yellow areas of the dustwrapper are slightly marked. ***204mm x 135mm. 194 pages. ***'Richard Nathaniel Wright (Sep 4, 1908 - Nov 28, 1960) was an American author of novels, short stories, poems, and non-fiction. Much of his literature concerns racial themes, especially related to the plight of African Americans during the late 19th to mid-20th centuries suffering discrimination and violence. Literary critics believe his work helped change race relations in the United States in the mid-20th century. ***"Black Boy" (1945) is a memoir by American author Richard Wright, detailing his upbringing. Wright describes his youth in the South: Mississippi, Arkansas and Tennessee, and his eventual move to Chicago, where he establishes his writing career and becomes involved with the Communist Party. "Black Boy" gained high acclaim in the United States because of Wright’s honest and profound depiction of racism in America. While the book gained significant recognition, much of the reception throughout and after the publication process was highly controversial. Wright wrote the entire manuscript in 1943 under the working title "Black Confession". By December, when Wright delivered the book to his agent, he had changed the title to "American Hunger". The first fourteen chapters, about his Mississippi childhood, are compiled in "Part One: Southern Night," and the last six chapters, about Chicago, are included in "Part Two: The Horror and the Glory." In January 1944, Harper & Brothers accepted all twenty chapters for a scheduled Fall publication of the book. In June 1944, the Book of the Month Club expressed an interest in only "Part One: Southern Night." In response, Wright agreed to eliminate the Chicago section, and in August, he renamed the shortened book as "Black Boy". Harper & Brothers published it under that title in 1945. Parts of the Chicago chapters were published during Wright's lifetime as magazine articles, but the six chapters were not published together until 1977, by Harper & Row as "American Hunger".' [Wiki] ***A rare copy of the first UK edition of Richard Wright's influential memoir of his early years, a frequent target for censorship and subject of controversy. With an introductory note by Dorothy Canfield Fisher (president of the Book of the Month Club, for which "Black Boy" was selected). This first UK edition was published to post-war economy standards and is a very fragile production. It is very hard to find copies now in presentable condition in the original dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
