Foot of spine worn with a 5mm closed tear. Front hinge cracked and nearly detached. A little foxing to prelims. Ow good.

Inside all pages, some of which remain uncut and plates in very good clean and bright condition. A nice copy.

Description: An excellent first edition of this illustrated study of the birds of Western Africa, edited by Sir William Jardine as part of The Naturalist's Library. First edition, bound in half calf with marbled boards. Dated using Jisc from copies of the work held at The University of Liverpool libraries. Published as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library, which covered a variety of topics relating to the natural world. Jardine was a Scottish naturalist, best known for this particular series. Edited by Jardine, although this volume was written by fellow ornithologist and entomologist, William John Swainson. This particular volume was on the subject of ornithology, more specifically relating to the natural history of the birds of Western Africa. Part II of II. With a memoir of French explorer, author and naturalist, Le Vaillant. Illustrated with thirty-two colour plates, a coloured illustrated title page, and a portrait of Le Vaillant. Collated, complete. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the boards and joints. Previous owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot. The occasional light offsetting from plates. Very Good

The text blocks are very good, with light foxing. Text blocks look like they have been trimmed, more so in Vol. II which is rougher overall, with occasional dogears and marks, and a 6cm closed tear at the upper edge of p189/190. Vol. I has tissue guards with the colour plates, with associated foxing and offset. Vol. II has paper guards, with associated foxing and offset.

Description: A very good copy of the 1st edition of The Birds of Western Africa, in 2 volumes in the original publisher's cloth binding with 64 hand coloured plates. The bindings have been rebacked, preserving the original spines and endpapers, and are clean, sound and tight. Vol I had lost the top section of the spine with some of the decorative title. It is only slightly sunned at the edge of the boards which have light wear as do the corners. The spine and board edges to Vol II are more sunned with wear to corners. Vol I: volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Bruce; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; advert; contents listing; Memoir of Bruce; text with black and white illustrations and 32 hand coloured plates; and a publisher's listing.286pp. Vol II: volume listing; half title; frontispiece portrait of Le Vaillant; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; text with black and white illustrations and 32 hand coloured plates. 263 pp. The original green endpapers have been preserved with professional repair at the joints. Some text is unopened in Vol I, which is very clean internally with well coloured plates. Vol II is also very clean and bright. The paper is slightly more toned with more offsetting and browning to tissue guards. On plate 21 there is a slight paint run from the colouring of the bird's beak.
