GREEN, John d (1934-). Birds of Britain [SIGNED by author]. The Bodley Head, London, 1967.

Price: US$433.17 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Folio, (35.5cm). With the picture musings by Anthony Haden-Guest. In the red cloth boards, gilt blocked titles to spine. Unpaginated. B&w photography featuring 58 young women from the scene in 1960s London, with numerous icons of the Swinging Sixties, including Charlotte Rampling, Patti Boyd - who also provides the arresting dust wrapper image - Julie Christie, and Susannah York. Many in double page spreads. The pictures attest to Green's creative take, reflecting no doubt, his advertising background. Signed by Green to flyleaf, 'To my dear / friend David / John d Green'. Most copies offered for sale have poorly kept dust wrappers, in part no doubt due to the book's size. This dust wrapper is unclipped, and bar some minor edgewear and a crease around a small bump to front lower tip, a fine example. Faint soil adjacent to Green's inscription. Pages show some toning around margins, only. Small split to head of spine, front tips slightly rubbed. Also included, two items of ephemera, promoting the launch of the 2016 reissue.

Description: GREEN, John [160] pp. Published by MacMillan, New York. Photography John d Green Art direction: David Tree. The Bodley Head Ltd 1967 14" x 11" The classic Sixties photographic book, with the iconic dust jacket present. A celebration of the Swinging Sixties and of the beautiful, creative girls that put London firmly on the world map as the hippest place to be. "Birds", beautifully photographed by John d Green, include Julie Christie, Susannah York, Hayley Mills, Dusty Springfield, Marianne Faithful, Mary Quant and many more. 'Miniskirts and the Rolling Stones, the Beatles and now the Birds. That means girls - feathery and soft, swinging and defiantly independent. London has cracked out of its sober chrysalis into an ultra visual supersonic capital-of-all-the-arts, London's beautiful girls used to try to look nice - and her nice girls looked invisible. Now the nice girls look exceptional, and the beautiful girls - incredible! The change is one of style rooted in a new attitude, new confidence, and the bravura of the youthquake.'
