[BIRD & BULL PRESS] SHAW, [George] Bernard. Flyleaves. Edited and with an introduction by Dan H. Lawrence and Daniel J. Leary. Thomas Taylor, Austin, 1977.

Price: US$165.00 + shipping

Description: One of 350 copies printed by Henry Morris at the Bird & Bull Press. 4to; red buckram with printed paper spine label; 62,[3],2 folding plates, printed in red and black, errata slip laid in. A fine copy, but for scattered ink marginalia to text and rear pastedown in the hand of the book's original owner, the noted Minneapolis collector and arts patron Waring W. Jones. Laid in are two typed letters from publisher Thomas Taylor to the Minnesota fine press printer Emerson Wulling, proposing an exchange of books. Transcriptions of Shaw's own marginalia, contrived in 1949 and written in copies of the best books in his collection to enhance their value at auction. The scheme, which the impoverished 93-year-old Shaw admitted was "a trick to make money," was only half-successful, as many of the best lots fell flat at Sotheby's. This a compelling copy, with ink annotations of a noted American bibliophile and a pair of good letters from the publisher.
