This copy has been "signed" by Kent using his original stamped thumb print on the limitations page at the rear of the book. The book is in near fine condition. No ownership marks/writing present within. Hinges tight, interior pages bright. Light offsetting to the cover cloth extremities. Lacking the original dust jacket. Limited edition of 950 copies (this being no. 628) containing 8 lithographs by Rockwell Kent along with his thumb print on the limitations page.

Description: Gray and white buckram, lettered/illus. in white, deckled text block edges. 148 pp., illus. w/ 8 lithographs by Rockwell Kent. No. 117 of an edition limited to 950 copies printed by Pynson Printers (New York), hand-numbered and with Kent's thumb print on rear colophon. Though hard to spot because of the variegated cloth binding, the front cover may show slight tanning toward the edges, with minor foxing noted to deckled text block edges. Rear flyleaf appears to have been neatly excised along binding gutter, though perhaps original to issue (rear colophon is followed by two blanks, and the paper used for the endpapers is consistent with that used throughout the text block), interior otherwise fully intact and about as issued. Original gray paper dust jacket is in 5 pieces, reassembled with minimal archival tape on verso and now in mylar. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall

Description: 8 black and white lithoghraphs (including title-page and the circular lithograph on the unnumbered colophon page), 145, (3)p. Original grey (in appearance, but actually woven black and white) cloth. 34 cm. Inked on front pastedown Modest cover wear, including a few brown spots. Former owner's name (Allison . ??) in upper right corner of front free endpaper, possibly written in what may be Elmer Adler's hand. Contents may be slightly age-toned but otherise fine. No jacket. INSCRIBED on front pastedown ("This copy specially inscribed for Steve Patterson by the printer Elmer Adler Princeton, 1 February 1945"). This edition of Beowulf was printed for Random House at Pynson Press, the private press founded by Adler in 1922. Copy #637 of 950 numbered copies which are signed by Rockwell Kent's thumbprint on the colophone page. Laid in is a Typed and Signed Letter (on Kent's letterhead stationery) to Adler from Kent which is dated August 10, 1944 and signed by Kent (as "Rockwell"). Kent apologizes in the letter for not having filfilled (and still being unable to fulfill) an otherwise undescribed "little request" from Adler) which Kent is keeping on his desk and "will as soon as he can." The letter is wrinkled and creased in the (blank) lower right corner. Also laid in is a folded legal size mimeo broadside announcment (letterheaded News from Random House) announcing Kent's Beowulf with a February 20, 1932 Publication Date. Patterson, the inscribee, came from a well-to-do family and was a graduate student in linguistics at Princeton where he was also the student head or just heavily involved in the Princeton Print Club. He later worked for a while in intelligence but was mostly an unpublished poet.

Description: Large quarto volume. From a limited edition of 950 numbered copies, this one being number 98. This copy now specially bound in full black goat skin, elaborately blind tooled, black on black. This background is then enhanced with a black and red celtic knot pattern. The front board is then further decorated with a silver lined depiction of a warrior. This image is a replica of the original design motif from the Random House publication. Beautiful bronze and black scallop patterned endpapers. Now housed in a large 1/4 leather black drop-back box with beautiful large red title letters to the spine. With eight lovely lithographs executed by Rockwell Kent. This copy is "signed" by a thumb print from Rockwell Kent at the limitation page, as usual with this title. However, it is signed again at the half-title in cursive with yet another finger print below that - I don't know for certain which digit. Verse translation by William Ellery Leonard. All together a one of a kind volume, now presented in the finest possible way. Fine.
