KAFKA, FRANZ. Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer. Gustav Kiepenheuer Verlag, 1931.

Price: US$2565.52 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: The extremely scarce first edition wraps-with-dustwrapper issue, for normal sale as well as for the review copies. The volume as issued, paperbound in the original red and blue-grey dustjacket, virtually in a mint state. In the near complete Kafka collection of Breon Mitchell (see Lame Duck Books Kafka catalogue of 1997), this is the only essential book missing. In the latter catalogue, Kafka s Amerika in analogous wraps-with-dustwrapper state is described as "akin to the so-called Pressenauflage of Beim Bau der Chinesischen Mauer, the dustjacket (being) of the same dimensions as on the bound issue, thus not extending to the full height of the (hardback) book." That copy sold for $8,500 (£4,000 at that time, now £7000). A few small dents to the front free endpaper, ever less on the following few pages then virtually unfaded clean flat sheets throughout)as well as a 1-inch paper-scrape and lower-corner slight dent on the rear wrap, and the spine with a deep dent vertically from the way it was stitched originally, but not a tear) otherwise fine throughout.cover colours bright. other copies known to have the cover nearly falling off, and bnits of text on the cover edges missing. this copy has none of those faults.
