WELLS. H. G.. Bealby. Methuen & Co, London, 1915.

Price: US$675.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Original red cloth, blind-stamped on the front board and lettered in gilt to the spine. In a complete original dust jacket, a rare survivor of an early example. Some minor foxing to the preliminaries and title page. With 35 pp of ads at the rear. A comic novel featuring Bealby, a serving boy to a great house. The jacket has some interior tape repair, not to hold anything together but rather to strengthen edges. An un-neccessary action. The ads are dated on the first page as "Spring, 1915" and on the final page of ads is stated "25/11/14." This agrees with Currey's points as the first issue with the exception that he states the boards are blue. Near Fine / Very Good.

George Philip Wells, son of H. G. Wells, was a zoologist and author. He co-authored, with his father and Julian Huxley, The Science of Life. A pupil at Oundle School, he was in the first class to learn Russian as a modern language in a British school. Bealby is a young boy who is absolutely determined not to accept his lot in life as a servant. However, despite having thrown tantrums and argued with his mother about his future he has not been able to change his fate. He reluctantly leaves his home for Shonts, a big country house, to work as a steward's boy. What he hasn't anticipated, however, are the guests that are arriving for the weekend at the big house, or for the arrival of the eccentric but captivating Lord Chancellor. What follows is an adventure that Bealby will not soon forget.
