Williams, Tennessee. Battle of Angels: Pharos: Spring, 1945 [Numbers 1 & 2]. Murray, Utah: Pharos, 1945.

Price: US$125.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Subtitle: “With a note on the play by Margaret Webster and an account of its production in the City of Boston by the author. This publication being the first number of Pharos, a magazine dedicated to creative writing, which is published intermittently at the pleasure of its editor from Box 215 at Murray, Utah. This is a double number.” Utah: Pharos, 1945. 123 pages, followed by 4 pages of ads. First printing. Original light blue-gray printed wrappers with minimal wear to the fragile yapped edges: a couple of superficial creases, one faint spot on the front cover [visible in one of the images] and a short tear at the base of spine; the red lettering remains bright and clear. The interior leaves are bright, crisp, and clean. This was the first separate appearance of the playwright’s work which was later revised into the more successful “Orpheus Descending.” As with every book from my father's collection, tipped in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly-----domestic sales sent with 'delivery confirmation' tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.

Price: US$283.25 + shipping

Description: Octavo. 121 pages, plus a two page note by Margaret Webster who directed the unpublished play in 1940 when it was aborted first by the clear hints of repressed sexuality in a Southern community from a fire and other misadventures. Once published in this small print edition by Pharos publishers in Utah in 1945, his writing began to attract Broadway producers who saw something of his raw power before The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire. Bound in blue paper wraps with yapped edges, printed in red some toning to edges. A very good copy.

Price: US$3500.00 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: First edition. About fine with typical wear to yapped edges in bright wrappers. The author's first separately published work, a play. Inscribed by Williams to Tony award-winning actress, Marian Seldes: "with love to you and a salute to Tallulah, Tennessee Williams 1972." Seldes appeared in the ill-fated 1964 production of *The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore* with Tallulah Bankhead. Bankhead, in what became her last stage appearance, struggled along with the help of Seldes despite health issues which took her life four years later. The book is laid into a folding stiff paper photo frame featuring a 5" x 7" print of Seldes and Williams. A wonderful association between two Broadway legends.
