In the short story Waugh resurrects a number of characters from some of his earliest novels, such as Peter, Lord Pastmaster, who first appeared as Peter Beste-Chetwynde in Decline and Fall and of course, Basil Seal himself, who appeared as the hero of The Black Mischief and Put Out More Flags.The story begins with the ageing Basil and Peter discussing the theft of a set of Peter’s shirts by a young man, Charles Albright, who it later transpires is involved with Basil’s daughter, Barbara much to the chagrin of Basil. Waugh describes the book in his dedication as a ‘senile attempt to recapture the manner of my youth’ Limited Editions were published in the UK and US in 1963 to coincide with his own 60th birthday.

In overall very good used condition in a poor wrapper with minor signs of age, handling and storage - wrapper complete but rubbed, brittle and chipped (now protected); blue cloth bevel-edged boards a touch rubbed to edges but remain overall clean and crisp. Binding tight and appears little read. Internally clean, no annotation or inscriptions - ownership signature neat to front endpaper dated 1963 and signed by the author to limitation page; slight toning to untrimmed page-ends but text and illustrated frontispiece (Kathleen Hale) bright and clear throughout. Not an old library book.

One of a limited edition of 750 numbered copies, this an out-of-series copy inscribed by the author on the limitation leaf, "For Frederick Stopp, from Evelyn Waugh, with autumnal greetings." Stopp, a Cambridge don, had published Evelyn Waugh: Portrait of an Artist five years earlier. It was a hefty tome initially, and Waugh bemoaned its length, writing that "a third could go without loss" in a letter to the publisher John MacDougall, 29 October 1957. As per Waugh's instruction, 15,000 words were cut. It is said that Ronald Knox sent Waugh a telegram: "Stop Stopp Stop." Quarto. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to front board in gilt, blue endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Colour frontispiece by Kathleen Hale, title page printed in blue.
