Description: 8vo (7 5/8" x 5 1/4" x 1 1/2"), dark blue cloth with black lettering on orange rectilinear "labels" on spine and front cover, [6] + 401 pages + [6] ADS. Sinclair Lewis (1885 - 1951) was an American writer and playwright. In 1930, he became the first writer from the United States to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Lewis is best known for his novels Main Street (1920), BABBITT (1922), Arrowsmith (1925), Elmer Gantry (1927), Dodsworth (1929), and It Can't Happen Here (1935). Babbitt explores the moral challenges faced by a typical hard-working American businessman from a Midwestern town who had Conservative middle-class values. The name "Babbitt" became synonymous with narrow-minded bigotry. More successful than Main Street, Babbitt "established Lewis as a major American author"--Pastore, p.105. Description: First edition, first state. 'Purdy' and 'my fellow human' on p. 49 lines 4,5. No jacket. Boards lightly smudged, minor general wear. 1922 Hard Cover. 401 pp. Lewis was the first American author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Five pages of publisher ads follow text. This classic satirical novel portrays Babbitt as a materialistic, hypocritical, and self-important middle-aged realtor. His brief romantic encounter and an attempt at liberalism are curbed by fear of criticism, forcing him to conform to the wills of his fellow citizens and club members. A novel by the author who won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Literature, which inspired the film starring Willard Louis and Carmel Myers. Lewis is most well-known for Main Street, though recently his cautionary tale It Can't Happen Here has seen increased popularity based on similarity to current political events.

Condition: Near Fine

Description: The author's classic satire of middle-class American life. Front free endpaper has a faded inscription noting the copy as a birthday gift in 1923, and the title page has what appears to be a 2" x 1/2" newspaper clipping stating, "Sinclair Lewis has one advantage. No one will ever bind him in limp leather." Outline of said clipping has transferred to facing page. Otherwise there is no other writing or marks. Pages are only slightly browned, especially the rear free endpaper. The first few pages are also a bit loose in the binding. Spine is tight and crisp. Boards are flat and true, and the corners are square. There is no dust jacket, but the boards remain in near perfect condition with the title and author still bright and clear on the blue background. Spine may show some slight browning, and the edges and corners appear only slightly bumped. Overall, this is a very clean, crisp copy that will make a lovely addition to any literary collection! This collectible, near fine, first edition/first printing copy is protected with an archival mylar cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Let thy humble servant know, o master. We'll be staying at the Hotel Chatham, Vanderbilt and 48th. Yes, lez you and I lunch while I'm there. Tell Dick I agree with him. Salaams, SinclairÂLewis." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with some professional restoration. Housed in a custom clamshell box. An exceptional example. With Babbitt (1922) Sinclair Lewis consolidated the reputation he had earned with his first best-selling novel, Main Street (1920). Like Main Street, Babbitt not only became a best seller, but it generated controversy, became a US cultural phenomenon, and eventually contributed a new word to the language. (Although the word “babbitt” has come to mean a “smugly conventional person,” George F. Babbitt is a more complex individual â€" and more troubled â€" than the dictionary definition would suggest.) Babbitt is the story of a middle-aged real estate broker who faces a series of psychological crises that reveal to him the emptiness of his superficially successful and prosperous life (Fleming).
