Hinges are loose, spine has damage along edges. Rounded, tattered corners on front and back boards. Gutter is shaken. Engraving guards are heavily foxed, text block is toned, but legible. Previous owner’s book plate on front paste down. Binding is shaken, but intact. Please see photos. All engravings present. First printing, preceding the large paper edition. Original brown cloth stamped in gilt on the spine with four rings in gilt and covers stamped in blind. Very good. 373 pages. No signatures or bookplates. With the period after the word "company" in the imprint, and the publisher’s advertisements printed on the endpapers, reading "Works of permanent value," for the front, and "Poetry and drama," and "School books" for the back. Brown cloth boards with blind stamped decorations and borders on front and back covers. Gilt titling and four gilt circles on spine. First printing with the red and black lettering on the title page and a period after the word "Company" on the title-page. With publishers ads to end papers, missing on later issues. Advertisement for other Philips/Sampson titles on inside front cover and second page and inside back cover and last page - stereotyped and printed by H.O. Houghton & Co., Riverside, Cambridge - Really fantastic copy, tight, clean with no markings and collectible.
