First published in book form in 1888, this work marked Barrie's first major success as an author. Like many of his early writings, the present work is deeply nostalgic and whimsical, capturing the magic of childhood and life in his native Kirriemuir, Scotland. It is embellished by wonderfully descriptive and entertaining plates by William Hole, an etcher especially adept with Scottish subjects, whose output included illustrations for Robert Lewis Stevenson and Robert Burns. Sir James Matthew Barrie (1880-1937) attended Edinburgh University before settling in London in 1885, where he became one of the most successful novelists and playwrights of his generation.
