Condition: Good

Description: Some small spots of dampstain or soil to top edges; else both volumes in Very Good condition. With Tan Backstrap and Blue boards. A reprint edition; copyright 1957 but published at later date. Ayn Rand, was an American author and philosopher, known for her fiction works and for developing a philosophical system she named Objectivism. Published in 1957, Atlas Shrugged is considered Rand's magnum opus. She described the novel's theme as "the role of the mind in man's existence ? and, as a corollary, the demonstration of a new moral philosophy: the morality of rational self-interest. It advocates the core tenets of Rand's philosophy of Objectivism and expresses her concept of human achievement. The plot involves a dystopian United States in which the most creative industrialists, scientists, and artists respond to a welfare state government by going on strike and retreating to a hidden valley where they build an independent free economy. Atlas Shrugged was a finalist for the US National Book Award for Fiction in 1958. In 1983, it was one of the first two books given the Prometheus Awards' Hall of Fame Award for libertarian science fiction.

Description: Peopled by larger-than-life heroes and villains, charged with towering questions of good and evil, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus: a philosophical revolution told in the form of an action thriller--nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS's The Great American Read. Who is John Galt? When he says that he will stop the motor of the world, is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he have to fight his battles not against his enemies but against those who need him most? Why does he fight his hardest battle against the woman he loves? You will know the answer to these questions when you discover the reason behind the baffling events that play havoc with the lives of the amazing men and women in this book. You will discover why a productive genius becomes a worthless playboy.why a great steel industrialist is working for his own destruction.why a composer gives up his career on the night of his triumph.why a beautiful woman who runs a transcontinental railroad falls in love with the man she has sworn to kill. Atlas Shrugged, a modern classic and Rand's most extensive statement of Objectivism--her groundbreaking philosophy--offers the reader the spectacle of human greatness, depicted with all the poetry and power of one of the twentieth century's leading artists. First edition, second printing. No DJ. Small rubbing on spine but otherwise fine copy

This is a 1st trade edition, 1st printing of the work published by Random House in 1957. It is without the dust jacket. ******************************************************* "Ayn Rand's epochal novel, first published in 1957, has been a bestseller for more than four decades as well as an intellectual landmark. It is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world--and did. Was he a destroyer or the greatest of liberators? Why did he have to fight his battle, not against his enemies but against those who needed him most--and his hardest battle against the woman he loved? What is the world's motor--and the motive power of every man? Tremendous in its scope, this novel presents an astounding panorama of human life--from the productive genius who becomes a worthless playboy.to the great steel industrialist who does not know that he is working for his own destruction.to the philosopher who becomes a pirate.to the woman who runs a transcontinental railroad.to the lowest trackworker in her Terminal tunnels. Peopled by larger-than-life heroes and villains, charged with towering questions of good and evil, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's masterpiece. It is a philosophical revolution told in the form of an action thriller." ******************************************************** Alice O'Connor ( . . . February 2, 1905 March 6, 1982), better known by her pen name Ayn Rand . . . , was a Russian-born American writer and philosopher. She is known for her fiction and for developing a philosophical system she named Objectivism. Born and educated in Russia, she moved to the United States in 1926. After two early novels that were initially unsuccessful and two Broadway plays, she achieved fame with her 1943 novel, The Fountainhead. In 1957, Rand published her best-selling work, the novel Atlas Shrugged. Afterward, until her death in 1982, she turned to non-fiction to promote her philosophy, publishing her own periodicals and releasing several collections of essays. ***** Rand advocated reason as the only means of acquiring knowledge; she rejected faith and religion. She supported rational and ethical egoism as opposed to altruism. In politics, she condemned the initiation of force as immoral and opposed collectivism, statism, and anarchism. Instead, she supported laissez-faire capitalism, which she defined as the system based on recognizing individual rights, including private property rights. Although Rand opposed libertarianism, which she viewed as anarchism, she is often associated with the modern libertarian movement in the United States. In art, Rand promoted romantic realism. She was sharply critical of most philosophers and philosophical traditions known to her, except for Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, and classical liberals. ******* The above text was taken from, respectively, Dutton publishing (via Google Books) and Wikipedia. Rand, Ayn. Atlas Shrugged.. Random House, New York, 1957.

Price: US$1250.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century. Large octavo, original green cloth, frontispiece stamped in gilt, spine stamped in black and gilt. Very good in a very good dust jacket, creasing to the half and title pages. Jacket design by George Salter. “From 1943 until its publication in 1957, [Rand] worked on the book that many say is her masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged. This novel describes how a genius named John Galt grows weary of supporting a society of ungrateful parasites and one day simply shrugs and walks away. He becomes an inspiration to like-minded men and women, all of whom eventually follow his example, until society, in its agony, calls them back to responsibility and respect. Again [as with Rand’s novel The Fountainhead in 1943] reviews were unsympathetic, and again people bought the book” (ANB). The theme of Atlas Shrugged, as Rand described it, is "the role of man's mind in existence." The book explores a number of philosophical themes that Rand would subsequently develop into the philosophy of Objectivism. By 1984 more than five million copies of Atlas Shrugged had been sold, and in a 1991 Library of Congress survey Americans named it second only to the Bible as the book that had most influenced their lives. It is the basis for the trilogy of film adaptations subtitled Part I (2011), Part II (2012), and Part III (2014).

Price: US$1300.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Exceptional first edition of Ayn Rand's (1905-1982) magnum opus and libertarian classic. Reportedly born from a conversation between Rand and fellow libertarian novelist, Isabel Paterson, Atlas Shrugged explores the morality of self-interest by depicting the consequences of a general strike by creative professionals who henceforth refuse to share with the world their art, innovations, and ideas. Set in a dystopic future America, Atlas Shrugged combines science fiction, mystery, philosophy, and romance to investigate several essential themes, including the nature of rationality, morality, capitalism, and individualism. The book would prove to be her longest novel and arguably her clearest statement (in fictional form) of the Objectivist philosophy that she spent much of her academic career fashioning. Together with other works in her oeuvre, including The Fountainhead (1943), Rand employed Atlas Shrugged to embody and express Objectivism's primary tenets, which include the belief that reality exists independently of consciousness, that human beings directly experience reality through their senses, that one can attain objective knowledge of the world through such sense perception, that the morally virtuous person pursues his or her own happiness, and that the only social system consistent with such morality is laissez-faire capitalism. Rand began writing Atlas Shrugged in 1946 following the success of The Fountainhead, which was then being adapted for film. Rand would compose and refine the book over the next several years, sharing early drafts of the novel with a coterie of students who had begun meeting at her house to discuss philosophy, including Alan Greenspan (economist and future chair of the Federal Reserve) and Leonard Peikoff (philosopher and future Objectivist popularizer). Rand would spend over two years writing John Galt's radio address until, in 1956, Rand was prepared to deliver the manuscript to the publishers. Atlas Shrugged has remained a popular classic ever since its publication in 1957, and has been translated into over thirty languages. The book was also selected as a finalist in 1958 for the prestigious National Book Award for Fiction, and it was among the first winners of the Prometheus Awards' Hall of Fame Award for libertarian science fiction alongside Robert Heinlein's 1966 classic, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. An exceptionally bright first edition of Rand's magnum opus whose libertarian message continues to influence readers throughout the world. Octavo. Original green cloth over boards with gilt titling and dust jacket (not price-clipped) with $6.95 price and 10/57 on front inside flap and publisher's full address to rear inside flap. Superb first printing in a bright dust jacket, minor edgewear to dust jacket at spine and folds, with slight chipping to head of spine, and small abrasions to front and spine of dust jacket, else fine in a very good dust jacket.

It was Rand's fourth, longest, and last novel, and she considered it her magnum opus in the realm of fiction writing.[1] As indicated by its working title The Strike, the book explores a dystopian United States where leading industrialists and businessmen refuse to allow the government to exploit their labor for the "general good." The protagonist, Dagny Taggart, sees society collapse around her as the government increasingly asserts control over all industry, while society's most productive citizens, led by the mysterious John Galt, progressively disappear. Galt describes the strike as "stopping the motor of the world" by withdrawing the "minds" that drive society's growth and productivity; with their strike these creative minds hope to demonstrate that the economy and society would collapse without the profit motive and the efforts of the rational and productive. The novel's title is a reference to the mythical Titan Atlas, who in the novel is said to hold the weight of the world on his shoulders.[2] The novel includes elements of mystery and science fiction,[3] and contains Rand's most extensive statement of Objectivism in any of her works of fiction, a lengthy monologue delivered by the strike's leader, John Galt.[4] The theme of Atlas Shrugged is the morality of rational self-interest. It advocates the core tenets of Rand's philosophy of Objectivism and expresses her concept of human achievement. The book explores a number of philosophical themes that Rand would subsequently develop into the philosophy of Objectivism.[5][6] It centers on the decline of Western civilization, and Rand described it as demonstrating the theme of "the role of man's mind in existence." In doing so it expresses many facets of Rand's philosophy, such as the advocacy of reason, individualism, the market economy and the failure of government. Atlas Shrugged received largely negative reviews after its 1957 publication,[7] but achieved enduring popularity and consistent sales in the following decades. In the wake of the late 2000s recession sales of Atlas Shrugged have sharply increased, according to The Economist magazine and The New York Times.

Atlas Shrugged includes elements of science fiction, mystery, and romance, and it contains Rand's most extensive statement of Objectivism in any of her works of fiction. The book explores a dystopian, increasingly socialist, post-economic collapse United States where many of society's most prominent and successful industrialists begin to disappear, abandoning their empires in response to aggressive new regulations. Without their support, many of the country's vital industries begin to collapse. The title is a reference to Atlas, a Titan of Ancient Greek mythology, described in the novel as "the giant who holds the world on his shoulders," although in Greek mythology he holds up the sky, not the earth. Description: RAND, Ayn. Atlas Shrugged. New York: Random House, 1957. Thick octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket. $4800.First edition of one of the most popular and influential novels of the last 50 years, in original dust jacket."From 1943 until its publication in 1957, [Rand] worked on the book that many say is her masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged. This novel describes how a genius named John Galt grows weary of supporting a society of ungrateful parasites and one day simply shrugs and walks away. He becomes an inspiration to like-minded men and women, all of whom eventually follow his example, until society, in its agony, calls them back to responsibility and respect. Again [as with Rand's novel The Fountainhead in 1943] reviews were unsympathetic, and again people bought the book" (ANB). By 1984 more than five million copies of Atlas Shrugged had been sold, and in a 1991 Library of Congress survey Americans named it second only to the Bible as the book that had most influenced their lives. First printing, in first-issue dust jacket. Perinn A4a. Description: First edition of one of the most influential novels of the twentieth century. Large octavo, original green cloth, frontispiece stamped in gilt, spine stamped in black and gilt. Boldly signed by Ayn Rand on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by George Salter. An exceptional example.

Description: FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of Rand's masterpiece; INSCRIBED BY RAND TO LUDWIG VON MISES: "To Dr. and Mrs. Ludwig von Mieses- / -Cordially- / Ayn Rand / 8/22/57". A spectacular association copy linking two of the most influential economic figures of the twentieth century. In August 1957 -nearly two months before the book was available to the public - Rand presented this copy of the first edition of Atlas Shrugged to Ludwig von Mises (sometimes spelled "von Mieses"), the Austrian-American economist and philosopher who was one of the leading figures of the modern libertarian movement, and immediately found a sympathetic ear. After reading Atlas Shrugged, von Mises wrote to Rand, offering strong praise for the book. In a letter to Rand dated January 23, 1958, he wrote:††". I enjoyed very much reading Atlas Shrugged and. I am full of admiration for your masterful construction of the plot. But 'Atlas Shrugged' is not merely a novel. It is also-or may I say firstof all-a cogent analysis of the evils that plague our society, a substantiated rejection of the ideology of our self-styled 'intellectuals' and a pitiless unmasking of the insincerity of the policies adopted by governments and political parties. It is a devastating exposure of the 'moral cannibals,' the 'gigolos of science' and of the 'academic prattle' of the makers of the 'anti-industrial revolution.' You have the courage to tell the masses what no politician told them:you are inferior and all the improvements in your conditions which you simply take for granted you owe to the effort of men who are better than you. ††"If this be arrogance, as some of your critics observed, it still is the truth that had to be said in this age of the Welfare State.††"I warmly congratulate you and I am looking forward with great expectations to your future work." The intellectual and philosophical bond between Rand and von Mises remained strong and the Ludwig von Mises Institue notes that "it was largely as a result of Ayn's efforts that the work of von Mises began to reach its potential audience" (Roderick Long).††Ayn Rand inscribed this copy on August 22, 1957, while the book was not available to the public until October 10, 1957, making this one of the earliest known inscribed copies. (We've located two other copies - inscribed to Cecil B. DeMille and Liln E. Rogers, the mother of Ginger Rogers, - inscribed on the same day.) A remarkable association linking two of the most important defenders of classic liberalism of the 20th century. New York: Random House, 1957. Thick octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket; custom box. Only the most trivial wear. ††A beautiful copy, and one of the most significant copies, of one of the most influential books of the century. Original cloth, original dust jacket
