Description: Around The World In Eighty Days, Jules Verne, Sampson Low, Marston, Low, & Searle, 1874, First Edition A First Edition (the First Edition seem to be split between 1873 and 1874 with later editions being specifically referenced to the title page) of one of Verne's most acclaimed works, illustrated througout. In the story, Phileas Fogg of London and his newly employed French Valet Passepartout attempt to circumnavigate the world in eighty days on a £20,000 wager set by his friends at the Reform Club. In good condition, the binding (W.H.Smith, The Strand) is straight and tight and the gilt lettering on the spine is bright. The boards are marked and there is some fading to the edges. There is slight damage to the top edge of the front board and some marks to the bottom edge of the spine. The end papers are pages are free from marks, tears or inscriptions save an owner's name, place and date to an early blank page. There is some foxing to the bottom edge. A rare and much sought after volume, unusual to find in such good condition, this would make an impressive addition to a library or a wonderful gift. Will be dispatched by courier, fully insured, carefully wrapped in bubblewrap and in a cardboard box.

Description: First UK edition of this Verne classic in the publisher's original deluxe binding. First published in late 1873 (though most copies were post-dated 1874), this extraordinary voyage was an instant hit with the British public and went through 5 editions in a year. This is a copy of the true first edition dated 1874 on the title page and with 32pp publisher's catalogue at rear dated October 1872, yes 1872 [as per Myers 1, p.61] - before Verne even became a Low author. Translation is by George Towle with introduction by Adrien Marx. Dark blue, sand-grained cloth over bevelled boards with elaborate illustration and lettering in gilt and black to front cover and spine with blind rules to lower cover. All edges gilt, light peach endpapers - the same shade as the original, but they are modern replacements, skilfully done. Squarish 8vo with xvi, 315pp text + 54 inserted plates including tissue-guarded frontis, all present. Very neat professional repair to small losses at head and tail of spine using matching period cloth. Minor rubbing to extremities and fading to spine but a perfectly sound and internally very clean copy of a rare first edition and one of the iconic books of the modern world.
