Original dark green pebbled cloth with titles in gilt on spine. 2pp of prelim. ads as called for. Frontis of the author and in-text illustrations by Thomas. Double-column text. Square, tight and clean throughout with little or no scattered foxing. Perhaps the odd spot here and there and mostly to end-papers. Minor edge-wear. Some blemishes and scratches to the cloth but still quite well-preserved. Unfaded gilt. Solid and clean overall and I think better than a Very Good but not Near Fine. A very pretty collectable copy of Collins' third great mystery after "The Woman in White" and "The Moonstone". Surprisingly one of the more uncommon of Collins' titles. (Hubin p.88; Gasson p.10-11).
