Description: A very good copy of Cather's first collection of poetry and her first book. This fragile volume is bound in brown paper-covered boards with paper label paste-down on the front boards and a paper label along the spine. There is light chipping to the spine label with some loss, but no chipping to the front paste-down. The front hinge has been expertly reglued. In 1896, Cather moved to Pittsburgh after being hired to write for the Home Monthly,[6] a women's magazine patterned after the successful Ladies Home Journal.[7] A year later, she became a telegraph editor and drama critic for the Pittsburgh Leader and frequently contributed poetry and short fiction to The Library, another local publication. In Pittsburgh, she taught Latin, algebra, and English composition[8] at Central High School for one year. She next taught English and Latin at Allegheny High School, where she became the head of the English department. Cather, Willa Sibert. April Twilights. Richard G. Badger, The Gorham Press, Boston, 1903.

Price: US$2750.00 + shipping

Description: Original boards, cover and spine labels. Slight wear to the top end of the spine, small chip missing from the label, split in front hinge over paper; otherwise a very good copy. Crane A1.a. First edition of Cather's first book, published at her own expense. Accompanied by the rare (one of two examples known to us) "Literary Note," a slip measuring 7-1/8 in. x 3-1/2 in. written by Cather as a promotional piece for April Twilights. Joan Crane, in her "Willa Cather: A Bibliography" (1982),p. 5, cities American Book Prices Current for 1930, noting a copy of April Twilights with a tipped-in "Literary Note", and concluding, although never seeing it, that it was "an announcement flyer for the book in the form of an advertisement and order form issued by the publisher." In 1997 we discovered this example of what was then the only known surviving example of this note, and identified it as being of Cather's authorship, it was acquired by David H. Porter and is discussed in his "On the Divide: The Many Lives of Willa Cather." In fact, it is a slightly revised or updated version of her autobiographical sketch published in It first appeared in The Writer (June [1900]: 90).

Cather, Willa. APRIL TWILIGHTS. Richard G. Badger, The Gorham Press, Boston, 1903.

Price: US$3500.00 + shipping

Description: First edition of her first book; a "vanity press" production of thirty-six poems. Cather reportedly destroyed whatever remained of the edition in 1908. INSCRIBED, "Mr. J. W. Rankin / From an old friend / Willa Silbert Cather / New York / May Second / 1914." Cather moved to Pittsburgh in 1896 and taught at Central High School for one year. Rankin also taught there, and we assume that is where they formed their friendship. Recased with the original paper-covering laid down and with the original printed labels retained. Both labels are darkened, the front appears to have had the lettering touched up, and the spine label has been mounted upside-down (with the lettering running down instead of up) and slightly beneath its original location. Not ideal but quite scarce inscribed. HER SCARCE FIRST BOOK, INSCRIBED

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition. Papercovered boards with paper labels on the front board and the spine, issued without dustwrapper. Cather reportedly destroyed the remainder of the edition in 1908. This copy Inscribed by Cather at a later date: "For Edwin Winter, In return for a beautiful letter he once wrote me about 'My Antonia'. Willa Sibert Cather. Five Bank Street. March 15, 1920." Also laid in is a two-page Autograph Note Signed "Willa Cather," written in pencil, that addresses her attempts to visit her doctor, her inability to make engagements at present, and says in part: "I came home with gout, but I admit it only to old friends. Anyhow, I'm glad I had the Wine in Paris and the gout in New York!" The note is folded, and has a couple of small tears, but is overall very good.
