RAND, Ayn. Anthem. Cassell, 1938.

Price: US$2995.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Unbeatable Price! The authentic ORIGINAL First Edition/First Printing issue of Anthem, published by Cassell of London after its rejection by twelve US publishers. Your chance to read Ayn Rand’s original text, which differs from her later, revised editions. Both front and back panels evidence some soiling; spine edges show some fraying. The binding is strong, a bit tender in the middle of the book, but still holding. No writings, bookplates or markings in the text of any kind. Closer to a novelette than a novel, closer to poetry than prose, and written as a diary, Anthem unwraps the hero’s struggle to identify this word for which he “felt torn.” Rand’s immortal dystopian novel was published well more than a decade before Orwell’s 1984. As relevant today as it was during its publication in America’s Red Decade, Anthem is here offered as ORIGINALLY written by Rand at an unmatched price! Discover the differences between Rand's ORIGINAL WRITING and her edited version, published 8 years later, after the success of her breakthrough novel, The Fountainhead. Book #Pv1252. $2995. From the world’s largest collection of rare, signed, and manuscript Ayn Rand in private hands.

Ayn Rand. ANTHEM [True first UK edition in scarce variant binding]. Cassell & Company, Limited, London, 1938.

Price: US$4168.69 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First printing of the true first edition, published in the UK by Cassell in 1938. Ayn Rand's American publisher Macmillan refused to publish the work, and it remained unpublished in the USA until 1946. ***Very good in brick-red cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. This is a variant to the standard Cassell first edition binding of mottled dark red cloth. The boards are faded, mainly at the spine and margin of the rear board near to the spine. There is also a light streak on the back board, and some marks to the spine. The gilt has oxidised somewhat over time and is dulled but still present. There is a small stain to the fore-edge of the page block, which just affects the outer margin of a few pages, but not affecting any text. [Please see scans] Internally, the book is near fine, with no inscriptions, and no tears or creases. The paper used is quite thick, almost like thin card and is of god quality, although slightly tanned with age. There is a small indentation affecting just a few pages right at the very top of the page, which is only noticeable if you look at the top edge of the page block. Without the very scarce dustwrapper. ***188 mm x 125 mm. 147 pages. ***'Anthem is a dystopian fiction novella by Russian-American writer Ayn Rand, written in 1937 and first published in 1938 in the United Kingdom. "In the summer of 1937, Rand took a break from working on The Fountainhead to write the novelette Anthem, a short, highly stylized tale of a future dystopia so saturated in collectivism that the word 'I' has disappeared from the language.Anthem is Rand's 'hymn to man's ego.' It is the story of one man's rebellion against a totalitarian society. Equality 7-2521 is a young man who yearns to understand 'the Science of Things,' but he lives in a bleak, dystopian future where independent thought is a crime, and where science and technology have regressed to primitive levels. In pursuit of knowledge, Equality 7-2521 struggles to answer the questions that burn within him -- questions that ultimately lead him to uncover the mystery behind his society's downfall and to find the key to a future of freedom and progress" (Rand Institute). Bonhams lot 3169 (2005). Provenance: From the private collection of Jay T. Snider. Very Good + in Fair dust jacket.
