One of Time magazine's 100 best English-language novels and the most famous of all twentieth-century political allegories. This account of a group of barnyard animals who revolt against their vicious human master, only to submit to a tyranny erected by their own kind, is a universal drama. Taking as his starting point the betrayed promise of the Russian Revolution, Orwell lays out a vision that, in its bitter wisdom, gives us the clearest understanding we possess of the possible consequences of our social and political acts. Eric Arthur Blair (1903-1950) was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic who wrote under the pen name George Orwell. His work is characterized by lucid prose, social criticism, opposition to totalitarianism, and support of democratic socialism. Orwell initially encountered difficulty publishing Animal Farm, largely due to fears that the book might upset the alliance between Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union. Four publishers refused to publish the work, yet one had initially accepted but then declined it after consulting with the Ministry of Information. Eventually, Secker and Warburg published the first edition in 1945. Contemporary reviews of the book were not universally positive. However, it was still published in America one year after its initial publication. This first American edition is a reading copy with original dust jacket! Gift quality.

Description: 1946 Animal Farm 1st ed George Orwell Bolshevik Revolution Dystopian Socialism All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. George Orwell, Animal Farm George Orwell s Animal Farm is perhaps the most important and recognized dystopia novel in the English language. First printed in 1945, this satirical book covers the events leading to the Stalin rule in Russia before World War II. On the surface, this book appears to simply be a story about animals coexisting on a farm together, however, Orwell s views on socialism are abundantly apparent as he is critical of Stalinism and the Spanish Civil War. Time Magazine has called it one of the 100 best English-language books, and according to Stringer, this book is A political fable that partly recounts, in an allegorical mode, the aftermath of the Russian revolution, and partly illustrates a belief in the universal tendency of power to corrupt (Stringer 22) Item number: #30224 Price: $499 ORWELL, George Animal Farm New York: Harcourt, Brace and Co., 1946. Condition: Fine

Description: Uncommonly well-preserved First American Edition (so stated) of the world's most famous modern animal fable and political allegory. Slim crown 8vo (186 x 121mm): [4],118pp. Publisher's black calico textured cloth, spine lettered in gilt, cream end papers; original first issue black dust jacket printed in red and white (designed by Art Brenner) and priced $1.75 and without "Printed in the USA" statement to rear flap. Green ink Christmas gift stamp to blank following front fly-leaf, else an excellent example, with crisp gilt lettering and unfaded jacket spine panel. Fenwick A.10d. Grolier (Orwell) 19.b (noting Christopher Morley's assessment of the book as "one of the great political satires" and Edmond Wilson likening Orwell to Voltaire and Swift). First published the previous year, in London, by Secker & Warburg. The author's most successful book at the time of publication, selling some 25,000 copies within a year; it has been continuously in print since 1945 and has been translated into all major languages. "Ian Willison quotes Peter Viereck, 'Bloody-minded Professors', Confluence (September 1952): '[Angus] Cameron was among those who after the war prevented Little, Brown from publishing George Orwell's anti-Communist satire, Animal Farm. Some 18 to 20 publishers, almost all the leading ones, turned down the best anti-Soviet satire of our time." (Fenwick) "Orwell developed his analysis of Stalinist communism during the Spanish Civil War after his experience in Barcelona, in 1937, of the violent suppression by Communist forces of POUM, the anarchist militia of which he was a member. . . . Animal Farm, which Orwell worked on during the War, is the brilliant realisation of his understanding of the Russian Revolution seen in terms of the rejection of servitude by the animals at Manor Farm. . . . Appearing as the post-war settlement was taking place, and as the Cold War began to be invented, the book seemed timely. The power of the fable comes from its simplicity and its utter conviction, as well as from its fabular analysis of the history of the Soviet Union as Stalin became its leader." Condition: Fine

Description: First American edition. About fine in very good or better dust jacket with rubbing, and very small tears. A brilliant, classic anti-utopian short novel, in which a cast of barnyard animals re-enact the events of the Russian Revolution and the betrayal of its more humane elements by Stalin. Well-adapted both as a 1955 cartoon and a 1999 cable movie using the latest animal-special effects, though both versions added upbeat endings to Orwell's harrowing vision. Usually well-worn this is a nicer than usual copy. *Connolly 100*.
