Price: US$450.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Signed First Edition, First Printing of this uncommon and significant early novel of modern Los Angeles. Ryan was a Los Angeles newspaper columnist who set the novel in the emerging and energetic downtown district of the famous Angel's Flight funicular railway. Prominent California historian Kevin Starr has written of Ryan's novel as notable in the development of the literary portrait of modern Los Angeles, capturing particular aspects of the urban environment emerging in the 1920s. Starr finds aspects of the novel anticipating two major aspects of L.A. literature -- a crime element that anticipates Raymond Chandler and urban alienation that anticipates Nathaniel West. Signed and dated by Don Ryan on the half title page. 296 pages, black cloth, gilt titles. The gilt decoration and publisher's name on spine has been mostly rubbed off. Has some edge wear on the covers. There is a non-author gift inscription on the front endpaper. .
