Description: The ninth edition, corrected and with an account of the author. Two volume set. Engraved frontispiece to both volumes and some text illustrations. This set is from The Lowther Castle Library of The Earl of Lonsdale with his attractive oval bookplate printed on blue paper with gilt design. Also signed on the title page by W. Lowther. Booksellers ticket in volume one "sold by Booker, No. 56, Bond Street, London. Paper slightly age toned and foxed. Endpapers foxed. Bound in a contemporary full tree calf with the Lowther monogram to the front covers. Edges heavily rubbed and frayed. Spine edges split and frayed, boards still firmly attached. Split down the centre of volume one, still holding together well. Top and bottom of the spines rubbed and chipped. Green leather titling labels slightly split and chipped. Gilt decorations to spines. Spines generally rubbed. Still a fair set. Interesting ownership and in the Lowther Castle Binding. This is the first edition with the life of the author. Volume one has 461 pages and volume two has 601 pages.

Front cover of volume 1 detached but present. Bookplate of Harley B. Mitchell on inside front covers of both volumes (mid-century US). Binding, apart from detached board, very tight. Pages clean and square. Leather scuffed at the edges, but attractive (photos available on request). Burton’s Anatomy of Melancholy was first published in 1621. He revised it several times in his lifetime. It was a popular and often-reprinted work, and fell famously out of print for the entire eighteenth century. When this edition of 1800 was published, there had not been a new edition in nearly 150 years.

Two volumes in ealy 19th century bindings, three quarter smooth brown leather over marbled boards, black spine labels, broad raised spine bands decorated in gilt, red speckled edges, frontis engravings in each volume, 461 plus 601 pages plus index at the end of second volume. Covers rubbed and scuffed, some roughness to the volume II spine head, joints secure, text blocks sound, pages clean with only a few instances of very minor foxing, armorial bookplate of Charles A. Woolley (by De Gruchy & Leigh) inside each front cover with evidence that an additional bookplate was placed over it but removed (residue above the Woolley bookplates), no other markings. Woolley was from Australia; the bookplate engraver was based in Melbourne, Australia. Hard Cover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
