He became a disciple of Samuel Christian Friedrich Hahnemann, the founder of homoeopathy. Returning to England he published in 1836 A Practical View of Homoeopathy, the first English book on the subject. However, because of opposition and ridicule from the medical profession, he abandoned homoeopathy and left for New South Wales. He arrived in Moreton Bay, where he was appointed acting colonial surgeon. With the end of military government, he was appointed commissioner of crown lands for Moreton Bay in 1842. His report on the state of the Aboriginals in the Moreton Bay described his expedition into the bunya country. From 1851 Simpson made substantial land purchases and was appointed a trustee of the Brisbane General Hospital in 1848 and was police magistrate for the Moreton district in 1853. He died at Portland Square, London in 1869. Sprache: englisch.

Description: Three Volumes, 8vo, the Sixth Edition of 1791, X, 499; VI, 518; V, 465. Bound in contemporary calf, lettering pieces missing, as are the number tags on Vols 1 and 2. Some minor bumps and scrapes to the boards; the front hinges of all three volumes have weakened but not yet split -- results of an attempt to read this work by one owner or another. The three spines show signs of fine cracking caused by inappropriate solvents or lacquers; this condition, like the weak hinges can easily be repaired by an experienced bookbinder or restorer. The work itself in its three textblocks is on bright, clean, unfoxed paper, eminently readable. A much sought-after set. Very Good overall with the defects noted in the bindings.

'The Wealth of Nations', coming at a point when 'natural liberty' was being being widely debated, had a decisive influence both on the study of national economy and on the freeing of economic policy from the artificial restraint of the mercantilist system. Smith's statement that labour is the source of a nation's commodities and that the variation in 'stock' values are due to the interaction of wages, profits and rent, formulated the doctrine of the classic school of economic thought, and round it all modern economic discussion has revolved' (PMM). SMITH, ADAM. An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. London: Strahan and Cadell, 1791, 1791.

Price: US$6800.00 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: SIXTH EDITION of the most important book in the history of economics. One of 2000 sets. The sixth edition is the first to have been published after Smith s death in 1790. The Wealth of Nations had no rival in scope or depth when published and is still one of the few worked in its field to have achieved classic status, meaning simply that it has sustained yet survived repeated reading, critical and adulatory, long after the circumstances which prompted it have become the object of historical enquiry (ONDB). Smith s Wealth of Nations has been the bible for generations of laissez-faire economists and political philosophers and is the cornerstone book of free-market theory. His individualistic view of political economy is neatly summarized in a famous quotation from the Wealth of Nations: It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interests. We address ourselves, not to their humanity, but to their self-interest. This is a particularly handsome copy in a very well preserved period binding. Provenance: bookplate and signature of James Forbes, 17th Lord Forbes. Three volumes. 8vo. Contemporary calf, morocco labels. A splendid set in a handsome period binding.
