Description: Decorated brown cloth. Repaired front cover spine seam split to cloth. Minor wear to top and bottom of spine. Rubbing to corners, minor foxing to first few pages front and rear. 386 pp plus 10 pp ads at rear of book. Very small/minor stain to top middle portion of last 20 pages not affecting text. Otherwise book is clean, complete, and tight. A first hand account of the authors travels. Chapters on Kansas, On the plains, Buffalo, American Desert, Kansas Gold Diggings, "Lo, The Poor Indian", Western Characters, Bridger to Salt Lake, Two Hours With Brigham Young, Mormonism, Army in Salt Lake, Carson Valley to Sierra Nevada, California, Mining, Yosemite, The Big Trees, Railroad To The Pacific, etc. I started to read this book and couldn't put it down."But the gray-wolf-who is a denizen of the prairies-(I think we have seen at least a dozen of the species to-day)-is a scoundrel of much more imposing caliber. Description: Clean, straight 170 year old first edition book in original brown cloth covered boards. Interior shows slight tanning, is in excellent condition. Ends of spine are worn, down to the textblock at top, 1/8" strip of cloth only, not the underlying cardboard, missing at tail of spine. Corners are rubbed and a 1" tear runs down top edge of spine. Bits of cloth are missing along front edge of spine appearing as a 2" slit. Book is in good plus condition. External flaws do not compromise the integrity of the book itself. 386 pages w/10 pages of advertising at the back.

Description: 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 386 pages; Publisher's pebbled brown cloth with decortive rules in blind to boards gilt title lettering dulled at spine. Front endpage and half-title missing, probably removed because of personal inscription. The first leaf is the title page. Cloth at spine chipped from crown to the height of the text block; fraying and rubbing at tail. Damp line along the top edge of the entire book and in the gutters of the first few leaves. Offset red stain to the front edge of the rear board. Binding slightly cocked. Contents complete, including the 10 page cataloge of Saxton titles at rear. A worn but serviceable 1st edition copy. Greeley composed the book as a series of letters published in the New York Tribune and issued as a book at the conclusion of his travels. Good ony
