Founded on authentic Documents. Printed for R. Griffiths, London, 1759, 444 pp, full original leather, 8.5 x 5.5”, 8vo. In fair condition. Front board fragile. Front joint is tender with creasing and cracking. Moderate wear to extremities with scuffing to corners and end bands. Surface of leather scuffed and worn. Stamped ownership of John Guy Eshleman (1877-1966), an important figure in Lancaster, PA, on front pastedown. Glassine pastedown and fly leaf are torn and stained. Old hand ownerships on title have been bleached. Preliminary pages are stained. The rest of the text is in good condition with typical toning and light foxing. Free of known marginalia. Binding intact. Please see photos. “Formerly attributed to Franklin, but possibly written by his son William, from copious materials furnished by his father”. One of the greatest documents of Colonial history, and the American quest for freedom and Liberty. Scarce & significant.

Description: viii, [18], 444 pages ; 21 cm. Bound in contemporary calf. Moderate cover wear. Head of spine chipped. Foxing, toning. Generally attributed to Franklin, but disowned by him in a letter to David Hume (27th Sept., 1760)--though he elsewhere admits that it was published at his expense. "Appendix. Containing sundry original papers, relative to the several points of controversy . ": pages [381]-444. Sabin 25512; Howes P204; Ford 253. Jackson was Franklin's agent in London. Later editions cite Franklin as the author, but Jackson is generally cited as the author for the first ed. Franklin apparently providing backing for the book.

Description: First edition. Handsomely rebound in period style, brown half calf over marbled paper covered boards, retaining the original red lether spine label lettered in gilt. New textured-paper endpapers. viii+ (18 pp. contents)+ 444pp. Binding: fine. Interior: generally fine with scattered occasional foxing, archival repair to the top edge of the title page (apparently repairing the area from which a contemporary signature was removed, a not uncommon practice.) Franklin spent several years in England preceding the outbreak of the American Revolution, furthering the interest of the Colonies and arguing that Americans were entitled to the same rights and representation as residents of Great Britain. This book was an inportant work detailing the government of then-colony Pennsylvania. It has long been attributed to Franklin with, however, some scholars holding that Franklin's assistant and co-agent Richard Jackson was a major contibutor.
