Small loss to base of front joint of Volume 1. Wear to surface of spines, edges and spine ends. Corners bumped. Binding firm and boards solid and intact. Laid paper. Internally generally clean with the odd bit of light foxing. Locke's 'Essay concerning human understanding' is one of the primary texts of empiricism in modern philosophy, its thesis being to reject the rationalist philosophers' notion of innate ideas and set forth new grounds for ideas, based in experience. These volumes cover Locke's refutation of rationalist thinking, his theory of ideas, theory of personal identity, language and knowledge. This work was influential to Enlightenment thinkers such as George Berkeley and David Hume. 8vo.
