Thus, this is the Second American Edition, and the first hardcover edition and the first edition with the Preface. Second American Edition - blue cloth boards with bright gilt title to spine. Very minor scuffing and bumping to corners and spine - brown endpapers - book is Near Fine, tight, square and clean of markings inside other than prior owner's name and date on title page - "George Walton Green, Feb. 4th, 1890". Frontispiece and tissue guard in perfect condition. 329 pages + ads. This is the Harpers Franklin Square true first edition with the Preface and dates 1883 with an "A" followed by an asterisk after the "A". Now protected by archival quality mylar jacket. 1st American Edition/1st Printing
