An almost imperceptible spine lean, spine sunned a bit, small gouge to the cloth on the spine just beneath and not affecting the title, tiney and very old bookseller sticker at the bottom of the ffep, text block unmarked.

The first edition was in French and published in Paris in 1897 and was entitled. Le Sphinx Des Glaces. and then first appeared in English in London in 1898 under its English title. An Antarctic Mystery. The french title could be translated as Mysteres among the Land of Ice. as well. faded a tad on the spine, else a very good tight copy, with many illustrations, one of Vernes last books.

Description: Very good first American edition book, no dust jacket. Green cloth covered boards will ship-wreck illustration on front panel in green, black, gray, and silver with silver and black text; spine has black and silver text and black illustration of a walrus. Illustration on front panel is lightly scuffed; front and back panels are lightly soiled overall. Head of board spine is creased with rubs on the corners and edges. Upper edge has a 1/8" vertical split in the center and smaller frays on the corners and ends of creases. Tail of board spine is also rubbed and chipped on the edges but to a lesser degree than the head of spine. Fore-edge corners have some degree of rubbing; a bit more so on the lower fore-edge corners which are also slightly turned in. Front paste-down has been repaired. Book is internally clean and tight. Taves & Michaluk V046; Myers 2. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott (1899), 336 pps. VG mylar protected copy; slightly cocked, lightly bumped tips, cloth has some wear and soiling, and cover vignette has some scratches, previous owner's info dated 1901 on f.f.e., modest repair to front hinge which I believe fixes a printer's error common to this title. Still an attractive copy.
