Norman Mailer. An American Dream (with Theodore Bikel's bookplate). The Dial Press, New York, 1965.

Price: US$35.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First Edition (NAP). This book brings together Norman Mailer and Theodore Bikel, in the sense that the book was previously owned by Mr. Bikel. His small bookplate is neatly affixed to the front inside cover (Plug: I have a number of his other books for sale on my site). You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are in solid shape. The silver lettering on the spine is bright. There is a slight tanning over some of the blue spine (fifth photo). There's also some light dust staining at the top edges of the cover. There isn't any rubbing at any of the edges or corners. The top page edge has a little bit of dust staining or spotting, mostly specks of it. The middle page edge which is deckled or rough-cut appears to have just a little bit of the same. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book looks terrific. The pages are exceptionally clean. The specks of dust staining at the top page edge have not migrated onto the actual pages as far as I can see. I did see a few pages with one speck-sized tan spot just off their middle edge. Otherwise I didn't find any soiling at all. I'm also not seeing any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments other than the aforementioned bookplate. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first three photos. It has some smooth rubbing on the front. It has a sliver of a small tear at the middle of the spine. There is some staining on the front and rear cover just adjacent to their middle edges and there is a small loss at the bottom edge of the spine, not reaching the lettering, but extending slightly onto the front cover. The flaps are in decent condition. They have a little bit of that same staining at their outer edge, not reaching the print. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. I have it in a fitted protective cover. From the dust jacket: 'Norman Mailer would rather dramatize the unthinkable than write a safe book. Here is An American Dream, his first full-scale work of fiction in nearly ten years. The time of the novel is 32 hours. In those 32 hours the hero of the book, Stephen Richards Rojack journeys through every imaginable evil, and some all but unimaginable pleasures-- an existential pilgrimage of great peril, of profound suspense.'

Description: From an auction of modern first editions that included a Norman Mailer lot--with the auction tag laid into the book--a fine copy in a near fine unclipped dustjacket. This copy is signed by the author on the half title page--signature only. A tight and clean copy with only the owner name in ink on the front free endpaper--a little toning to the page edges. The dustjacket is remarkably well preserved --bright with no fading to the spine as is often seen with this title. Some shallow edgewear to the head and heel of the spine--otherwise would be fine. Tight spine and hinges--a nice collectible copy.

Mailer, Norman. AN AMERICAN DREAM. The Dial Press, New York, 1965.

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Description: First edition. From the collection of Adeline Lubell-Naiman. INSCRIBED, "To Adeline - In return for a long letter / Norman / Feb 1965." Spine unevenly faded, otherwise about very good in worn but still presentable dust jacket. Adeline Lubell-Naiman was the editor instrumental in the eventual publication of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. In 1946, while an editor at Little, Brown, Lubell-Naiman convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, which she talked up to her publisher. Unfortunately, she was also the one to suggest historian and critic Bernard DeVoto read the manuscript--he recommended not publishing. But Mailer submitted it to Rinehart, who published the book in 1948. Over the years, Lubell-Naiman remained close friends with Mailer and his wives. In the summer of 1968 she even played the role of "Adeline McCarthy," a president of a women's college in Mailer's film "Maidstone" (Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center website).

Price: US$350.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: New York, NY, Dial Press, 1965. First edition, advance review copy with publicity photograph of Mailer and advance review note laid in. 8vo. Blue cloth with silver lettering embossed on spine and front board, gray endpapers, rough cut pages, 270 pp. The milieu of "An American Dream" is New York City; the nighttime of plush East Side duplex apartments, of police precinct stations, of after-hours clubs, of Lower East side tenements. Onto this environment Mailer impresses his singular imagination, creating a classic world of action and horror that takes on the dimensions of an American myth. Dust jacket has slight shelf wear, bindings are slightly sunned at extremities, writing on rear endpaper, text block tight, clean and appears gently read. Very good in a very good dust jacket, protected by a mylar cover.
