Morris, William:. An Address Delivered by William Morris at The Distribution of Prizes to Students of the Birmingham Municipal School of Art on Feb. 21, 1894 (Evelyn Waugh`s "Lord Marchmain"`s copy !),. London, Longman`s & Company. Printed at the Chiswick Press,, 1898.

Price: US$363.79 + shipping

Condition: Fine

Description: Original half cloth binding, hand-moulded paper, 25 pages, some unopened, some marks and stains to both boards, inside very good condition. Inside the front cover is the very large and ornamental bookplate of William Lygon, 7th Earl of Beauchamp, mounted, designed by renowned bookplate artist and copperplate etcher Charles William Sherborn, R.E. 1902. This bookplate design was itself exhibited at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in 1903, as detailed in Charles Davies Sherborn`s 1912 biography of his father. A laid-in notice is included in this volume indicating the publication is printed with the original Morris-designed Golden type, under the auspices of the Trustees of the Kelmscott Press. William Lygon, the 7th Earl of Beauchamp, (1872-1938) was a noted patron of a number of British Arts and Crafts artisans including C.R. Ashbee, who designed the carved bookcases in the Library at Madresfield Court, Beauchamp`s ancestral seat in Worcestershire. A number of William Morris`s Kelmscott editions were in fact housed in this Library, among the thousands of other books. In addition, the 7th Earls` wife commissioned the decoration of the Chapel at Madresfield Court in the British Arts and Crafts style as a wedding present to her husband in 1902. "Waugh fashioned his portrayal of the Flyte family of Brideshead around the Lygons of Madresfield. The exiled head of the family, Lord Marchmain, is based on Lord Beauchamp. Sebastian Flyte is Hugh Lygon, the much-loved second son, to attend whose funeral Beauchamp risked arrest by returning briefly to England. In the acclaimed television version of Brideshead Revisited, Laurence Olivier monopolised most of an episode in one of the longest deathbed scenes on film, in the bosom of the family and in the ancestral home. Except for the venue (and a mistress as the cause of the family woes), Waugh’s scenario captured something of the original. The news that their father was dying of cancer brought his surviving children for a last reunion in New York. There, in the swankiest suite at the Waldorf Astoria, in the presence of his son and heir, Viscount Elmsley, and his daughter, the Lady Dorothy Lygon, he expired peacefully on 14 November 1938, aged 66. The body was taken on board the great ocean liner, Queen Mary, and entombed at Madresfield. There was no denying that the seventh Earl Beauchamp went out as he had lived — in style." (Clune, The Governors of New South Wales 1788-2010, 2009). Madresfield is still in the property of the family and the library is largely intact, books from "Lord Marchmain" are rarely on the market, more so with such fitting content.
