Price: US$39.99 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: This lighthearted farce features an American under the spell of Britain's aristocracy and an English earl equally intrigued by American democracy. While eccentric inventor Colonel Mulberry Sellers attempts to pursue his claim to the earldom of Rossmore, the rightful heir determines to renounce his title and find a place in American society. When the young lord's identity is wiped out in a hotel fire, he's free to assume a new name and realize his egalitarian dreams--an undertaking that leads him into the company of Colonel Sellers and a romance with the Colonel's daughter, who is practical seamstress Sally Sellers by day and romantic Lady Gwendolen by night. An unjustly neglected gem by the great American storyteller, this novel is a fast-moving comedy that also offers thought-provoking reflections on the construction of self and identity. Hardcover. Condition: Good Shelf Wear. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dj. Line Drawings (illustrator). First Edition. green cloth, gilt, black design and lettering Photos available by request. Mark Twain (PSUED Samuel Langhorne Clemens) [1835-1910]. The American Claimant. Charles C Webster, New York, 1892.

Price: US$75.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: [1]-[xvi]+17-277+[1]+[8 ads] pages with frontispiece and 23 black and white illustrations. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4). Issued in olive green cloth with gilt lettering and black pictorial to spine and cover. (BAL 3434) First American edition. The Colonel Mulberry Sellers here re-introduced to the public is the same person who appeared as Eschol Sellers in the first edition of the tale entitled The Gilded Age, years ago, and as Beriah Sellers in the subsequent editions of the same book, and finally as Mulberry Sellers in the drama played afterward by John T. Raymond. The name was changed from Eschol to Beriah to accommodate an Eschol Sellers who rose up out of the vastly deeps of uncharted space and preferred his request--backed by threat of a libel suit--then went his way appeased, and came no more. In the play Beriah had to be dropped to satisfy another member of the race, and Mulberry was substituted in the hope that the objectors would be tired by that time and let it pass unchallenged. So far it has occupied the field in peace; therefore we chance it again, feeling reasonably safe, this time, under shelter of the statute of limitations. Condition: Spine ends and corners moderately rubbed, spine gilt dulled, spine faded, University of Chicago Library book plate to front paste down. Over all a very good copy.

"The American Claimant is a comedy of mistaken identities and multiple role switches. Its cast of characters include an American enamored of British hereditary aristocracy and a British earl entranced by American democracy. Twain wrote the novel with the help of phonographic dictation, the first author (according to Twain himself) to do so. This was also (according to Twain) an attempt to write a book without mention of the weather, the first of its kind in fictitious literature (although the first sentence of the second paragraph references weather: "breezy fine morning"). Indeed, all the weather is contained in an appendix, at the back of the book, which the reader is encouraged to turn to from time to time."

Twain, Mark (Clemens, Samuel L.). The American Claimant. Charles L. Webster & Co., 1892.

Price: US$125.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: A superb copy with gleaming cover gilt, tight and unmarked except for a historic 1919 Asheville, North Carolina bookplate neatly tipped to the front endpaper. Twain wrote this novel with the help of phonographic dictation, likely the first author to do so. This was also an attempt to write a book without mention of the weather, the first of its kind in fictitious literature (although, of course, the first sentence of the second paragraph contains "fine, breezy morning"). Indeed, all the weather is contained in an appendix at the back of the book, which the reader is encouraged to reference from time to time. The story is a comedy of mistaken identities and multiple role switches. One rarely finds such a fine copy of this Twain work.

Description: New York: Charles L. Webster & Co., 1892. Original olive-green cloth pictorially decorated in black and dark green. First Edition of this novel in which Twain tried, unsuccessfully, to recreate the character of Colonel Sellers from THE GILDED AGE. This American edition came out in late March or early April 1892; the London edition came out about six months later. This copy is in olive-green cloth; others are in grey-green cloth but are otherwise identical -- there is no priority between the two colors, and there are no "issue points" of the text. The volume is in bright, near-fine condition (minor rubbing at the extremities). Blanck 3434; McBride p. 134.

Description: First edition of Twain's comedy of mistaken identities with the publication date on both the title and copyright page. BAL 3434. Octavo, original publisher's cloth, frontispiece and 25 in-text illustrations by Dan Beard. In very good condition. Twain wrote The American Claimant with the help of phonographic dictation, making him the first author to do so. This was also (according to Twain) an attempt to write a book without mention of the weather, the first of its kind in fictitious literature (although the first sentence of the second paragraph references weather: "fine, breezy morning"). Indeed, all the weather is contained in an appendix, at the back of the book, which the reader is encouraged to turn to from time to time.

Description: 1892 Mark Twain 1st ed American Claimant Samuel Clemens Illustrated FAMOUS Art “Nothing breaks up an author’s progress like having to stop every few pages to fuss-up the weather. Thus it is plain that persistent intrusions of weather are bad for both reader and author.” –Mark Twain, The American Claimant ‘The American Claimant’ is an 1892 novel by American humorist and writer Mark Twain. This comedy of mistaken identities is a classic tale of “greener grass”. According to Twain himself, “No weather will be found in this book. This is an attempt to pull a book through without weather.” This would be the first American fictional work to attempt to employ this method. Including the frontispiece, this example has 24 line-drawings by Dan Beard. This would be the second Twain novel to be illustrated by Beard, the first one being ‘A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court’ (1889). Twain was so enamored by Beard’s artistry, that he gave him creative freedom to interpret the text as he pleased. Item number: #30602 Price: $499 TWAIN, Mark The American Claimant.
