Steadman, Ralph; Thompson, Hunter S. (introduction by). America. Straight Arrow Books; San Francisco, California, 1974.

Price: US$75.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition/first printing. Hardcover with dustjacket. Black cloth-covered boards, 12 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches, unpaginated, b/w illustrations. Book very good plus--near fine (modest bump to upper edge of rear board). Dustcover very good plus (not price clipped; mild rubbing and edge wear; three short closed tears, the longest 7/8 inch). One of Steadman's best books. From the Introduction by Hunter S. Thompson: "There's a wild theme in Steadman's drawings: decadence, corruption, immorality. Obscenity in its broadest sense is another hallmark of the things that shock him. I think he sees all of America as a mockery of what it should be. He probably thinks it was doomed from the start. He has that King-George-III notion of America. A bunch of crude upstarts --- couldn't make it work. He works best when you put him in a situation where he's bordering on flipping out. During one of the intermissions [at the Watergate hearings], Ralph leaped up with a beer in his hand and knocked [Senator] Sam Ervin off his feet. When he comes over here and gets involved in these horrible scenes, Steadman has a way of becoming part of the story." (1722RO007)

Hunter Stockton Thompson (1937 – 2005) was an American journalist and author who founded the gonzo journalism movement. He rose to prominence with the publication of Hell's Angels (1967), a book for which he spent a year living and riding with the Hells Angels motorcycle club to write a first-hand account of their lives and experiences. Author Tom Wolfe has called Thompson the greatest American comic writer of the 20th century. STEADMAN, Ralph.. America.. Straight Arrow Books, San Francisco., 1974.

Price: US$608.94 + shipping

Description: First edition. Quarto. Unpaginated. Packed with his scabrous drawings, some of which are from his jaunts with Dr Hunter S. Thompson but most of which appear here for the first time. Each section (''New York'', ''Money'', ''Las Vegas'', ''Miami'', etc) has an introductory note by the artist. There is also an interview with Thompson about working with Steadman. On the title-page is printed a somewhat disingenuous Warning Note by Steadman: ''What you see in these drawings, of course, is not you Americans. They are only cartoons - not to be taken seriously - disregard them. They are terrible propaganda and obviously the ravings of a demented scribbler!''Presentation copy from the artist, boldly inscribed across two pages: ''To Michael ffolkes from an admirer - from in fact Ralph Steadman - 31.5.75''. The recipient was a fellow cartoonist and contributor to the satirical magazine Private Eye in the days when its stable of graphic artists was outstanding.Tail of spine slightly bumped and showing signs of damp. Very good in very good dustwrapper nicked and rubbed at the edges.

Condition: Very Good

Description: A collection of drawings made by Steadman, a British artist, during his peak period, where he commented on American scenes and cultures. These are both published and previously unpublished works from his Rolling Stone assignments with Hunter S. Thompson, as well as works commissioned on Disneyland, the Kentucky Derby, Dallas, Miami, etc. Some of the drawings are thematic, classified under the chapter titles Money, Vietnam, and Police. With an introduction, in the form of an interview with the editor, by Hunter S. Thompson, with whom Steadman collaborated on the books Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. Unpaginated, but about 176 pages. 9-1/8 by 12-1/4 inches. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good dust jacket. Signed "HST" and "Hunter" by Thompson, and dated 10/12/79 on the introduction. This copy with a previous owner's bookplate and blindstamp on the front endpapers. The jacket has several tears, a missing a chip from one corner, and a couple of old tape repairs on the back (verso) at the top of the spine. Not the greatest copy, but for some reason this book doesn't turn up often in nicer shape, let alone signed by Hunter S. Thompson.
