Price: US$110.00 + shipping

Description: pp. 306, 300. 8vo. Both volumes bound in three-quarter leather over marbled boards,Kingsley's second novel, first published by Chapman and Hall in 1850. This complete set was custom bound for the noted British bibliophile, Francis Frederick Fox, in handsome 3/4 polished calf over marbled boards, with the top edges gilt, and the endpapers marbled. Both spines have three coloured leather labels, the first (top) of which states 'Kingsley's Works', the second (middle) stating the title, and the third (bottom) stating the year of publication. The armorial bookplate of Francis Frederick Fox is tipped-in just before the half title page. The binding is signed (i.e., attributed to) 'William George, Bristol', being the binder, publisher and bookseller more commonly encountered as 'William George's Sons'. The boards show rubbing to the extremities, spine a bit pulled, and with some light staining to the leather. Contents unmarked and tightly-bound, showing a bit of very light marginal age-toning. Overall, a handsome presentation in good plus condition. Written in sympathy with the Chartist Movement, and in which Carlyle appears as one of the characters in the book, Kingsley attempts to expose the social injustice suffered by workers in the clothing trade and the trials and tribulations of agricultural workers.
