G-. Heavy wear at corners and spine ends. Moderate wear to edges and boards. Hinges cracked. Photo of Conrad pasted to the ffep which is torn 1/2 inch at fore edge, loss at lower corner. Ffep and half-title are partially detached. Text is clean. Ships wrapped in bubble wrap and packed securely in a box.

Description: First American Edition of Conrad's First book, blue cloth, two minor rub spots to cloth on spine seam top, otherwise book is in very nice condition, 276 pages plus 3 pages ads. The London edition was published by T. Fisher Unwin 29 April 1895 in an edition of 1100. The American Edition from Macmillan followed just four days later on (3 May 1895) in an edition consisting of only 650 copies. this is the First American Edition/First State with MACMILLAN & Co at the bottom of the spine. Unobtrusive light rubber stamped address inside front paste-down "McCully, 726 South 10th Street, Philadelphia"

One leaf has a defective section of margin neatly replaced, with text minimally affected (one word on each side of leaf). Neat ownership name on front pastedown, corners a little rubbed. The author's scarce first book; one of 650 copies [v. Keating: 'A Conrad Memorial Library' 1929, also confirmed by Lohf & Sheehy].

A rather bright copy of Joseph Conrad's first published novel, involving a Dutch trader in the jungle of Borneo. One of 650 copies originally printed.
