Greenaway, Kate. ALMANACK FOR 1884. George Routledge and Sons, London, 1884.

Price: US$175.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition of Kate Greenaway's second illustrated almanack for children. Kate Greenaway achieved great success in 1878 with her first solo publication UNDER THE WINDOW, and quickly became a household name. This achievement came after years of study at the National Art Training School and the Heatherley School of Fine Art, where she rubbed shoulders with the likes of Elizabeth Thompson (later Lady Butler), Edward Burne-Jones, and Walter Crane. Her style, featuring rosy-cheeked children and young adults, captures a romantic and cheerful brand of Victorian childhood nostalgia and was immensely popular; she was one of the most well-known illustrators of the Golden Age, and her art adorns everything from books to greeting cards to home decor. The 1884 ALMANACK came in eight binding variations. It features a calendar for the year with fashionable children and young people engaging in various pastimes. This is followed by three pages of text noting the birthdays of the English royal family, locations and opening hours of various museums, post office information, and more. An attractive little book for little hands. 5.25'' x 3.5''. Original color pictorial wrappers with edges painted brown, saddle-stitched. Illustrated in color throughout. [24] pages. Wrappers with some light edgewear and a couple of shallow creases. Occasional offsetting from illustrations to leaves. Colors vibrant.
