Kate Greenaway. Almanack For 1883. George Routledge and Sons, London, 1883.

Price: US$84.47 + shipping

Description: The deluxe first edition of Kate Greenaway's popular alamancks, colourfully illustrated calendars in Greenaway's distinctive style. The popular Kate Greenaway almanack for the year 1883.Greenaway was an artist and writer during the Victorian era, and was best known for her illustrations for children's books. Her career began when she illustrated the burgeoning market of holiday cards, before her first work, 'Under the Window', was published, making her an instant success. Most of her drawings depict Queen Anne style costume, an imaginary eighteenth century style rather than Victorian. This almanack was one of Greenaway's best known publications, a yearly endeavour providing a charming illustrated calendar. Greenaway's original almanack was published yearly from 1883 to 1895, with none published in 1896. Another volume followed in 1897, then reissues were produced from 1924 to 1929.Illustrated in colour throughout in Greenaway's distinctive style. In the original publisher's quarter deluxe morocco binding with paper to the boards. Externally, a little age-toned and discoloured, as is usual with cream binding. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Very small chip to the tail of the spine. Rear hinge has failed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with a couple of light spots. Good Only

Greenaway, Kate. ALMANACK FOR 1883. George Routledge and Sons, London, 1883.

Price: US$175.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition of Greenaway's first foray into almanack illustrating, with lovely seasonal pictures. Kate Greenaway achieved great success in 1878 with her first solo publication UNDER THE WINDOW, and quickly became a household name. This achievement came after years of study at the National Art Training School and the Heatherley School of Fine Art, where she rubbed shoulders with the likes of Elizabeth Thompson (later Lady Butler), Edward Burne-Jones, and Walter Crane. Her style, featuring rosy-cheeked children and young adults, captures a romantic and cheerful brand of Victorian childhood nostalgia; she was one of the most well-known illustrators of the Golden Age, and her art adorns everything from books to greeting cards to home decor. The 1883 ALMANACK came in nine binding variations. It features a calendar for the year with figures engaging in seasonally-appropriate activities, much like the labors of the month in a Book of Hours. This is followed by four illustrations of spring, summer, fall, and winter, and a short poem about the passage of the year. An important item in Kate Greenaway's large body of work. 4'' x 3''. Original cloth-backed color pictorial boards. all edges stained green. Blue endpapers. Illustrated in color throughout. [24] pages. Light soiling to edges of boards; some toning and a few mild spots of soil to rear board. Occasional light foxing throughout. Illustrations vibrant.

Description: A collection of 13 almanacks by Greenaway, held in a clamshell case in the style of book, with green leather spine and marbled boards. A little rubbing to the edges of the box. The almanacks are all in french with the exception of 1884, which is in a different format and in English. (this one is in a soft cover and sized 13cm x 9cm, the rest are in hardback and size 10cm x 7.5cm) with no wrappers. All are in good, clean condition, with just a touch of handling and edgewear. This is a near complete set of this series of children’s books. "The beginning of 1883 had seen the publication of Kate Greenaway’s first Almanack. Published at one shilling by George Routledge & Sons, and of course engraved and printed in colours by Mr. Edmund Evans, it achieved an enormous success, some 90,000 copies being sold in England, America, France, and Germany" (Spielmann and Layard, 122). This set comprises each year to 1895 in their French editions. There was no almanack issued in 1896. A final one (not present here) was issued in a glassine wrapper in 1897. 140 by 100mm (5½ by 4 inches). .

Description: Catherine ÒKateÓ Greenaway (1846-1901) was a painter and illustrator whose artworks appeared in dozens of books over the course of her career, including volumes of poetry and short fiction by Robert Browning and Bret Harte. Her work also appeared in fashion and dŽcor: the department store Liberty of London adapted her designs into a popular line of clothing for children; in addition, many middle-class families who were enamored with GreenawayÕs work decorated their childrenÕs bedrooms with wallpaper printed with her art. GreenawayÕs Almanack series was wildly popular in the United States and much of Europe: the 1883 edition alone sold 90,000 copies. An additional almanac was published in 1897, though no almanac was published in 1896. Fourteen volumes, thirteen twentfourmo, one twelvemo. Color illustrations throughout. PublisherÕs glazed paper boards with illustrations. 1889 volume is bound in publisherÕs brown cloth boards. 1884, 1886, and 1892 volumes are bound in imitation vellum and, along with the 1889 volume, gilt-edged and lettered in gilt on front boards. 1884 volume is a 12mo stitched pamphlet. Slight rubbing at edges and some rubbing on boards of the 1889, 1893, and 1895 volumes. Light foxing, as usual. Some damp staining on back board of 1888 volume. Additionally, some staining on endpapers of 1890 volume, but in general the 1890 and 1891 volumes are remarkably bright and clean. Description: A straight run of Greenaway's delightful Almanack series, lacking only the final issue (1897, issued by a different publisher; none was issued in 1896). Greenaway was one of the great illustrators of the Victorian era, in influence and popularity the most significant female illustrator of that period. Her style is immediately recognizable, and spawned many imitators. "In her idyllic and profoundly nostalgic depictions of vaguely eighteenth-century and slightly stilted children, Greenaway combined strong outlines and a keen ability to arrange and pattern space with the use of a palette of soft, silvery pastel colours" (ODNB). Her Almanack series was one of her best-known publications, each year producing an almanack - an illustrated calendar - with different binding options. This collection, preserved together in a custom box, illustrates the series as it evolved over the years, and the variant bindings within issues. Some copies preserve the dust jacket, which, it goes without saying, is very unusual for a 19th century volume. 1883: yellow cloth-backed pictorial boards. Two copies of the same variant. Schuster & Engen 3.1a. 1884: glazed limp pictorial wrapper; with another variant with border stained brown; and with two copies of white imitation morocco gilt variant. Schuster & Engen 4.2a; 4.2c; 4.2d. 1885: yellow cloth-backed pictorial boards, light turquoise endpapers, with the dust jacket. Schuster & Engen 5.3a. 1886: orange cloth-backed pictorial boards, bright yellow endpapers, with the dust jacket. With another copy, white imitation morocco gilt. Schuster & Engen 6.4a & 6.4c. 1887: yellow cloth-backed pictorial boards, light turquoise endpapers. Schuster & Engen 7.5a. 1888: pink cloth-backed pictorial boards, with the dust jacket. With another copy, blue cloth-backed pictorial boards. Schuster & Engen 8.6a & 8.6b. 1889: black cloth-backed pictorial boards. Schuster & Engen 9.7a. 1890: black cloth-backed pictorial boards, with the dust jacket. Schuster & Engen 10.8a. 1891: yellow cloth-backed pictorial boards, with the dust jacket. Schuster & Engen 11.9a. 1892: blue cloth-backed pictorial boards, with the dust jacket. With another copy, imitation morocco gilt. Schuster & Engen 12.10e for second copy - the blue cloth-backed variant not noted by Schuster & Engen. 1893: yellow cloth-backed pictorial boards, green edges, with the dust jacket. With another copy, olive green silk gilt. Schuster & Engen 13.11b & 13.11c. 1894: tan cloth-backed pictorial boards, turqoise endpapers, with the dust jacket. With another copy, imitation morocco gilt. Schuster & Engen 14.12d & 14.12b. 1895: orange cloth-backed pictorial boards, with the dust jacket. With another copy, cream imitation morocco gilt. Schuster & Engen 15.13a & 15.13d. 23 volumes, including several duplicates, duodecimo. All in original bindings, see note. Housed together in custom clamshell box. Illustrated throughout by Greenaway. Box lightly rubbed, the front joint a little tender. Generally in very good condition, some lightly soiled, a few jackets with minor chipping and peripheral wear (1890 almanack without front flap); a very desirable set.
