Haggard, H[enry] Rider. ALLAN QUATERMAIN: BEING AN ACCOUNT OF HIS FURTHER ADVENTURES AND DISCOVERIES IN COMPANY WITH SIR HENRY CURTIS, BART., COMMANDER JOHN GOOD, R.N. AND ONE UMSLOPOGAAS .. Norman L. Munro, New York, 1887.

Price: US$150.00 + shipping

Description: Octavo, pp. [1-3] 4-226 [227-240: ads], original pictorial white wrappers printed in gray green, orange and black. Early U.S. edition. Issued as "Munro's Library," Double Number, volume 50, number 788, May 31, 1887. One of several pirated American editions which appear to have been published in July 1887. Rand, McNally & Co.'s "Globe Library," No. 26 with front wrapper dated 1 February 1887 was listed in Publishers' Weekly 9 July 1887, as was Harper's authorized American edition, published as "Harper's Handy Series" No. 139 with front wrapper dated 1 July 1887. Publication date for both Longmans, Green's UK edition and Harper's authorized American edition was 1 July 1887. Several other unauthorized American editions, including Norman L. Munro "Munro's Library" edition dated 31 May 1887 and George Munro's "Seaside Library" edition dated 29 June 1887 were listed in PW a week later, 16 July 1887. Scott, p. 20. Spine ends chipped and several other small chips from spine panel, chip from lower fore-edge corner of front cover and first and second leaves, a few leaves dog-eared, mild general dust soiling to wrappers, text block printed on wood pulp paper and therefore somewhat darkened but, in general, the pages are not brittle, as is often the case with these notoriously fragile subscription library books. While the Harper edition is most likely the first American edition, this Norman L. Munro edition is far less common and certainly is a very early American edition, if not the true first. (#158672)

Price: US$207.50 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: A complete first printing of Haggard's classic fantasy, in beveled dark blue cloth boards with gilt titling, the goose cartouche to front board clear, if worn to about 70 percent of original brilliance. Spine rolled about 1/4-inch. Nameplates of Previous Owners George Sergent and Moira Jones to front endpapers. The first-edition typographical errors are present as expected, "geneleman" to page 59, "it compared" to the bottom of pg. 258, "Godness me" to pg. 269. How quickly these errors were corrected is not clear, which makes it puzzling that so little is made of the notice found here to verso of the Contents page, namely that the new Haggard adventure "'Allan Quatermain: Being an Account of His Further Adventures and Discoveries . . .' Is commenced in the January Number of Longman's Magazine," a notice which can only have appeared in the true, December 1886, first printing, which surely would have been dated and thus removed by the middle of January. Betty Blythe starred in the 1925 silent, but Ursula Andress has essentially owned the role of Ayesha -- "She Who Must Be Obeyed" -- since she strode onscreen in the 1965 Hammer film, also featuring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. (Let us not speak of the intervening 1935 stinker which began and ended the film career of Helen Gahagan, thus condemning her to enter politics and famously lose to Richard Nixon after being branded "The Pink Lady.") 317 pp. followed by 2 pp. publisher's ads, including for "Barchester Towers" and "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

Description: First edition, first issue. With portrait frontispiece and 19 wood engravings. 8vo, elegantly hand-bound in half burgundy oasis morocco with raised bands to the spine, titled in gilt, cloth sides, black endpapers, with publisher's cloth covers bound in at the rear. A fine copy, both binding and text-block in excellent condition. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Allan Quatermain was Haggard’s most popular hero, best known as the protagonist in KING SOLOMON’S MINES. Many believe Quatermain to be the inspiration for Indiana Jones. The character Quatermain is an English-born professional big game hunter and occasional trader living in South Africa. An outdoorsman who finds English cities and climate unbearable, he prefers to spend most of his life in Africa, where he grew up under the care of his widower father, a Christian missionary. In the earliest-written novels, native Africans refer to Quatermain as Macumazahn, meaning "Watcher-by-Night," a reference to his nocturnal habits and keen instincts. In later-written novels, Macumazahn is said to be a short form of Macumazana, meaning "One who stands out." Quatermain is frequently accompanied by his native servant, the Hottentot Hans, a wise and caring family retainer from his youth. His sarcastic comments offer a sharp critique of European conventions. In his final adventures, Quatermain is joined by two British companions, Sir Henry Curtis and Captain John Good of the Royal Navy, and by his African friend Umslopogaas

Foyle who formed one of the largest English private libraries of the 20th century at his estate in Essex. Sir Henry Rider Haggard KBE (1856-1925) was heavily influenced by the larger-than-life adventurers whom he met in colonial Africa while he lived there between 1875 and 1882. He created his Allan Quatermain adventures under their influence, during a time when great mineral wealth was being discovered in Africa, as well as the ruins of ancient lost civilizations of the continent such as Great Zimbabwe. This novel was published serially in "Longman's 1 Magazine," Vols. IX and X, between January and August, 1887 and is a sequel to King Solomon's Mines (1885); it was followed by 10 prequel novels and four prequel short stories, totaling eighteen works. The protagonist is an English professional big game hunter and adventurer; in film and television he has been portrayed by Richard Chamberlain, Sean Connery, Cedric Hardwicke, Patrick Swayze and Stewart Granger among others. WILLIAM A. FOYLE (1885-1963) was one of the leading London booksellers of the 20th century. He opened his first bookshop with his brother Gilbert in 1903 and by the late 1920s their bookstore in Charing Cross Road held a stock of four million volumes on over thirty miles of bookshelves. His vision for the business was a bookshop for the world - for every one from any station in life - "The People's Bookshop", and it became a meeting place for famous writers and distinguished figures, along with members of the public. In the early 1940s Foyle bought Beeleigh Abbey, a 12th-century monastery in Essex and formed one of the largest English private libraries of the 20th century. The library was sold at auction by Christie's in July 2000. The three-day sale realized some £12,000,000, making it the single most valuable collection of books ever to be sold at auction in Britain or Europe.
