Fitzgerald, F. Scott. All the Sad Young Men. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York & Philadelphia, 1926.

Price: US$250.00 + shipping

Description: Ex-Los Angeles Department Store Library. 1st edition early - probably 1st printing and 1st state. The typeface is not battered on Pg. 38 lines 6-9; not battered on pg. 248 lines 21-24 and the page number 90 has no battering anywhere and the 90 is distinct. 267 pages. Dark-green mesh patterned cloth. Blind-stamped front cover- Spine title in faded gilt. Scribner's seal on the copyright page along with the 1926 on the title page and 1926 on the copyright page. This book is made interesting by the addition of a Dept Store printed label applied to the very front cover of the book measuring about 4 inches long by 1 3/4 inches wide stating "The Broadway Department Store/Broadway Fourth and Hill Arthur Letts, Jr. President READER'S LIBRARY." Inside is a larger library type label: "This Book is the Property of The Broadway Department Store Reader's Library Books One and Two Cents A Day - No Membership Fee/Time Limit on all Books 30 days ." Customers had to put down an 8 cent deposit on two-cent a day books and 5 cents deposit on one-cent-a-day books. This rare Fitzgerald 1st state printing - was for rent as a two-center. There is also an ink rubber-stamped number 40973 on the inside front pages and a portion of the original dust jacket inside flap or possibly back cover panel has been glued to the free endpaper. Most interesting - fair condition - a neat addition to a Fitzgerald collector's library I would think. These "flaws" of a famous local Los Angeles department store ex-library rental book: - in this case are cool and photogenic as a display.

Condition: Very Good

Description: First edition, second or third printing with battered type to pp. 38 and 248. One of 10,100 copies. Publisher's green cloth, stamped in blind to front board and in gilt to spine. Very good, with light rubbing to spine ends, light offsetting to endpapers, light spotting to pages (primarily some pages at the front and rear), and some small tears to fore edges of pp. 259 - 264. Overall, an attractive copy. Bruccoli A 12.1.b/c. All the Sad Young Men is Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories and includes the following nine titles: "The Rich Boy," "Winter Dreams," "The Baby Party," "Absolution," "Rags Martin-Jones and the Pr-nce of W-les," "The Adjuster," "Hot and Cold Blood," "The Sensible Thing," and "Gretchen's Forty Winks." All the Sad Young Men was published a year after Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, but interestingly, it includes a pseudo prequel to the iconic novel. In the story "Absolution," Fitzgerald provides a unique glimpse into Jay Gatsby's childhood as James Gatz. This chapter was eventually excluded from The Great Gatsby in order to keep the title character shrouded in compelling mystery.

Price: US$500.00 + shipping

Description: Handsomely bound in finely-woven green cloth stamped brightly in gold on the spine. First issue with the Scribner's Seal on the copyright page and unbattered bype on pages 38 and 248; also the page # 90 type is intact. With a discrete name and date in ink at the top of the front endpaper. Very clean and tight throughout with only a touch of rubbing to the extremities. A collectible copy. Contains "The Rich Boy," "Winter Dreams," "The Baby Party," "Absolution," and several other short stories. Fitzgerald wrote the stories in All the Sad Young Men at a time of disillusionment. He was in financial difficulty, he believed his wife Zelda was romantically involved with another man, she had suffered a series of physical illnesses, and his play The Vegetable had been a failure. Upon publication—and somewhat belying the notion that Fitzgerald's most famous novel had not been enthusiastically received—the New York Times wrote, "The publication of this volume of short stories might easily have been an anti-climax after the perfection and success of 'The Great Gatsby' of last Spring. A novel so widely praised — by people whose recognition counts — is stiff competition. It is even something of a problem for a reviewer to find new and different words to properly grace the occasion. It must be said that the collection as a whole is not sustained to the high excellence of 'The Great Gatsby,' but it has stories of fine insight and finished craft." Ironically, in a letter nine months earlier, Fitzgerald had advised his editor Max Perkins against publicizing the book through the newspaper. "Rather not use advertising appropriation in Times—people who read Times Book Review won't be interested in me."(Wikipedia) First Edition, first issue with the Scribner's Seal on the copyright page and unbattered type.

Description: First edition, a beautiful copy with college humor-laced provenance from the year of publication. Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories, this book followed directly in the wake of GATSBY's success. The stories themselves, including "Absolution" and "The Rich Boy, " were composed both before and after GATSBY, taking on similar themes, and building a larger conversation with the beloved novel. Copies rarely survive in as beautiful shape as this one, but the additional provenance feels particularly apt: it was gifted to sorority member Charlotte Cooper at Syracuse University's Alpha Phi House. A tremendously fitting Jazz-Age provenance with an otherwise pristine copy. 7.5'' x 5''. Original full green cloth, lettered in blind on front board and in gilt on spine. Original unclipped brown pictorial dust jacket with flapper on front panel by Cleonike Damianakes Wilkins. Fore edge machine deckle. Scribner's seal on copyright page. [8], 267, [1] pages. Inked joke "because of Croupy Coop" on front panel of jacket, referring to gift recipient to whom the book is inscribed on the front pastedown: "Charlotte F. Cooper / Alpha Phi House / From / Lee Story / March 1926." Syracuse University Book Store ticket on gutter of front pastedown. Aside from inscriptions, beautiful.

Fitzgerald, F. Scott. All the Sad Young Men.. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1926.

Price: US$7800.00 + shipping

Description: First edition, first issue of Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories. Octavo, original green cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell case. All the Sad Young Men is the third collection of short stories written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published by Scribners in February 1926. Fitzgerald wrote the stories at a time of disillusionment. He was in financial difficulty, he believed his wife Zelda was romantically involved with another man, she had suffered a series of physical illnesses, and his play The Vegetable had been a failure. Upon publicationâ€"and somewhat belying the notion that Fitzgerald's most famous novel had not been enthusiastically receivedâ€"the New York Times wrote, "The publication of this volume of short stories might easily have been an anti-climax after the perfection and success of 'The Great Gatsby' of last Spring. A novel so widely praised â€" by people whose recognition counts â€" is stiff competition. Fitzgerald, Scott Francis. All the Sad Young Men', US signed and inscribed first edition. Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926.

Price: US$57241.04 + shipping

Condition: Near Fine

Description: Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald (1926) All the Sad Young Men , US first edition, first printing, published by Charles Scribner s Sons. Signed and inscribed in blue ink in the year of publication to businessman and philantropist Robert Ingersoll Ingalls Jr: For Bob Ingalls, In memory of a summer on the Baltic Sea from His Faithfully, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Juan-les-Pins 1926. First state book with all first issue points present: Scribner s seal and 1926 with no subsequent printings mentioned on the copyright page. Batter type on page 38, line 6-9 (left margin), page 248, line 21-24 (left margin) as called for. First issue dust jacket with the lips not battered. Provenance: The Fitzgeralds stayed at Juan-les-Pins on the Riviera from March until December 1926. Robert Ingersoll Ingalls Jr (1906-68) was the son of Robert Ingersoll Ingalls Sr (1882-1951), the founder of Ingalls Iron Works and Ingalls Shipbuilding. Jr inherited 90% of his father s business. This copy was part of the Maurice Neville collection, sold in April 2004 at Sotheby s. Condition: a near fine book with clean boards and with the lettering clear and vibrant on the spine. A little offsetting to the endpapers, and a few pages overopened. The dust jacket is beautiful and near fine with just a little edge wear to the head of spine and with a faint stain on the front cover, remaining in outstanding condition given its age. All the Sad Young Men was published at the end of February 1926. It was his third collection of stories (containing nine), including several of his finest: The Rich Boy, Winter Dreams, The Baby Party, Absolution, and The Sensible Thing. Juan-les-Pins, the location of the inscription, was mentioned by Fitzgerald in his seminal Tender is the Night (1934). In fact, Fitzgerald started writing the novel whilst staying there but was unable to finish it before his return to America. Scarce in such beautiful condition let alone inscribed. It seems easier to find inscribed copies of The Great Gatsby (1925) than of All the Sad Young Men (1926). First and Fine
