John Dryden. All for Love or, the World Well Lost: A Tragedy. Printed for William Andrew Clark, Jr. by John Henry Nash, 1929.

Price: US$36.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: This 6.125 x 8.5 inch, 79 page hardcover book is the 1929 fine press edition by John Henry Nash of San Francisco. This first edition as such by Nash was printed with 250 numbered copies and this is number 166. This printing by Nash featured two separate books and housed together in a slipcase. This is only *one* of the two items often found together, the facsimile edition of 1678. This copy is in very good condition with only one condition issue to mention - - all four corners of the red paper-covered boards are worn through with the black boards under the paper showing. The worn corners only extend an eighth of an inch from the corners. Beyond that this volume would be in at least near fine condition as there are no additional issues to mention. The white vellum spine is bright and clean with the gilt lettering also bright. The interior text shows a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown but beyond that the interior text pages are in fine condition with the older looking paper and lettering are without blemish or markings. 79 pages.

Dryden, John. All For Love or, the World well Lost: A Tragedy. San Francisco. Printed for William Andrews Clark, Jr., by John Henry Nash, 1929.

Price: US$95.00 + shipping

Condition: Good

Description: Hardcover. Vellum spine and red paper over boards. Title in gold on the spine. xxix + 97 pages + suite of color plates at the rear. Good condition (there's a bump at the foot of the spine and a tiny chip at the rear hinge). Binding tight. Pages clean. Measures 12.75 x 9 inches. A limited edition of 250 copies -- this copy is not numbered. Usually this volume is found with the companion facsimile of Dryden's work in a slipcase, but this volume is all alone. Perhaps, since it is unnumbered, it is an out-of-series volume. Or perhaps it has simply gotten separated from the slipcase and smaller facsimile.

Tipped in slip reads: "Compliments of William Andrew Clark, Jr. Christmas, 1929". Clark wrote a 22 page preface, followed by a dedication, then Dryden's preface, then the play in modern font. Last, the color plates. Both books immaculate, flawless BUT: minor wear of upper tip of smaller vol. There is more wear on lower tips of larger vol, this appears to be worse than it actually is as the underlying board is black. Both vols with bookplates of Stuart Walker, of the Portmanteau Theater. Bkplts designed by Dugald Stewart Walker 1883-1937. Dugald was a writer, children's book illustrator and bookplate designer. He wrote a few books, illustrated dozens and designed many dozen bookplates. His career as an illustrator was covered in the 1991 "Virginia Cavalcade". The artical: "The Art of Make-Believe, The Bookplates of Dugald Stewart Walker", is by Stacy Moore & Edward Campbell. A google search found a 1917 artical in the Pensacola News Journal connecting both Walkers. It describes a play by Dugald performed in Stuart's Portmanteau Theater. A 2nd bkplt in the smaller of the Bridgewater Library.
