Alaskan Boundary Tribunal (Government Printing Office). Atlas of Award An 1904 atlas published to definitively establish the border between Canada and Alaska.. , 1904.

Price: US$300.00 + shipping

Condition: Very Good

Description: Negotiations between the United States and Britain over the Canadian/Alaskan border reached critical mass in the late 20th century, when the Klondike Gold Rush took place in the Yukon. Canadian miners wanted an outlet for the mineral ore along the Pacific Coast, while the U.S. claimed that territory as part of the Alaska Purchase. Ultimately, an arbitration panel comprised of six prominent politicians (3 Americans, 2 Canadians, 1 British) decided in favor of the United States. In response, the Alaskan Boundary Tribunal published this Atlas of Award, which codifies the decisions imposed by the arbitration panel in a series of 25 lithographed maps. These were prepared by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and lithographed in Baltimore by the firm of Julius Bien & Co. An index map shows the area in question and identifies the newly finalized border in bright red ink with individually numbered triangulation stations used to determine the exact measurements. Following the index are twenty-four maps drawn to a scale of 1:160,000. Lines of triangulation and their accompanying stations, camera stations, and topographic details are shown in extensive detail. Sheet Width (in) 16.25 Sheet Height (in) 19 Condition Description The spine is loose on the original cloth binding, but otherwise the atlas is in excellent condition. The 25 lithographed maps are clean and intact.
