Description: Original large octavo bound in green pebble grained cloth with decoration in gilt to the front panel and decoration and lettering in gilt to the spine. All edges beveled. Faint shadow of a previous owner at the top of the title page. The book is quite large, coming in at 627 pages. There is a large fold-out map at the rear. Illustrated throughout with many full page engraved plates, all with tissue guards, including the frontispiece, and dozens of in-text illustrations. This volume is extremely clean, bright and solid. It is so common with book of this size to see damage at the hinges. This volume has no damage and is in remarkable condition. This volume comes from the collection of acclaimed aviator, sailor, and adventurer, Steve Fossett. After his untimely death in 2007, his vast collection of travel and exploration books was placed at auction. This volume has Steve Fossett's book-plate on the front free endpaper. Near Fine.
