Originally planned as a bear hunt, Harriman, a railroad magnate, invited many of the leading scientists of the day, and the undertaking grew to be possibly the largest and most elaborate private expedition over mounted. A steamer was chartered, and the party cruised the northwest coast between May & July, 1899, reaching as far north as Port Clarence. Many of the photos are by Edward Curtis, and the book is a beautiful production. Ten additional volumes of scientific results were published in ensuing years.
