This is a restored binding using the original boards and a new spine recreated in the manner of the original, based on evidence of board and spine colors discovered while removing a later binding. A couple pages have some pen notations. Covers edgeworn.

Nineteenth-century half yellow morocco, raised bands, marbled boards, spine decorated and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Bound by J.B.Hawes, Cambridge. Fine Aids to Reflection is a collection of moral and religious aphorisms, with commentaries. Coleridge's purpose in this, his last major work of theology and philosophy, is to address his thought to the unspiritual but reflecting reader who is led from worldly-mindedness to the acceptance of spiritual religion. An excellent copy of this important if difficult work.

Coleridge (1772-1834) compiled this unsystematic collection of commentaries and aphorisms on selected passages from the 17th century Anglican divine Archbishop Leighton. It stresses the importance of Christianity as a "personal revelation" and further distinction between Reason and Understanding, originally drawn from Kant, as the source respectively of "Moral" and "Prudential" action. 404 p. Octavo. In a one-half vellum over brown cloth binding by Morrell (London), with gilt stamping and marbled endpapers. Some occasional pencil marginalia. The vellum is lightly soiled; else very good.

A little bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Small tidemark and discolouration to the spine label. A couple of light marks to the boards. Hinges are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean. Very Good
