Elegantly hand-bound in half tan calf with gilt titles to spine, raised bands, matching cloth sides, publisher's original cloth spine preserved at rear. Contents clean with some very light expected reading marks, edges gently toned, one or two small spots, exterior as new. A near fine copy in an attractive recent leather binding. Set in 1915 on the treacherous rivers of war-torn Central Africa, the gin-sodden trader Charlie Allnut reluctantly agrees to help prim missionary Rose Sayer travel down river on a hazardous journey to destroy a German gun boat. Filmed by John Huston starring Katherine Hepburn, and featuring an Oscar-winning performance from Humphrey Bogart. Only 2500 copies were originally printed.

Description: The First UK printing published by William Heinemann Ltd., London in 1945. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition . Original publisher's tan cloth with gilt titling to the spine. Very light bumping to the lower corners. Mild pushing to the spine tips with a very light vertical crease to the spine. The binding remains very tight and sound. Mild spotting to the text block with some light toning to the page edges. Free from inscriptions and erasures. A small light mark to the rear lower panel. Protected in a loose archival Mylar cover. Only 2500 copies were printed and very scarce in its original binding. The book was adapted very successfully for the 1951 John Huston film of the same title starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. A very sharp collectible copy. Description: First edition, first printing. Publisher's original brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding firm and the cloth fresh and without fading. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. The closed text block edge with minor spotting. Complete with the rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper which has been subtly professionally restored replacing pieces to the bottom of the spine and lower right corner of the front panel. Correctly priced 7/6 net to both the front and rear flaps. An attractive looking example of the author's scarcest and most desirable title to obtain in dustwrapper. The basis for the 1951 Academy Award winning John Huston directed film of the same name starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn.
