Description: First edition. Hard cover published by Richard Bentley in London in 1863. Green cloth covers with gilt design of a lion attacking a horseman on front and gilt lettering on spine. Front and back have embossed borders. Covers are stained, corners are bumped and worn, and spine is creased. Front cover and spine are only attached to back cover. First several pages have tears and holes (possibly insect damage) along side edge. Pages have spotting or foxing. Second page has a large water stain, and title page has some stains. Name of a previous owner is written at top of title page (has a date of 1885). Pages containing the list of illustrations and the folding map are loose. Pages have some tanning. Book is in acceptable condition. 451 pages plus ads for books in back, 2.6 lb.; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 451 pages

Smith Drawing Prize Christmas 1865 from his friend H.E. Harris?.Second edition recounting the African hunting expeditions of the famous hunter William Charles Baldwin (d. 1903), filled with 'wild adventure, cool daring, and narrow escapes from death' (Daily News, Dec. 1862). 'A work of early sport and travel, this describes Baldwin's journeys through Natal, Zululand, the Transvaal, Bechuanaland, Matabeleland, and Namaqualand to the Zambesi and the Victoria Falls (though not yet known as that). He hunted in the lands of the Amatongas and Zulus where he collected hippopotamus, lion, eland, rhinoceros, buffalo, kudu, and giraffe. Near Lake Ngami, he bagged elephant, then crossed the Tugela River on his way to the Zambesi (Victoria) Falls where he encountered buffalo and lion' (Czech). 'Mr. Baldwin's experiences are written in a simple and unostentatious manner, but he went through more adventures than almost any other of the great South African travellers and hunters' (Mendelssohn). The present copy is the second English edition, published in the same year as the first English and American editions (the original title read simply African hunting from Natal ). Some occasional light foxing. Foldout map preceding p1. All 40 indexed illustrations are present with additional un-indexed plates: p186 'Chasing Haris Bucks'; p372 ' An African Serenade'; p424 ' Narrow Escape'. The plate from p424 is gilt stamped to the front board. Gilt ttling to spine faded but clearly readable. Mendelssohn pp73-74 lists this as 'second edition' although there is no reference to indicate this on the copyright page. 'During the last three years of Baldwin's wanderings, he joureyed over from 12,000 to 15,000 miles of country, and becoming at last somewhat weary of his vagrant life, he made up his mind that it was "nearly time to call a halt.'
